Hi

Looking for a freeware AVI editor that will allow me to crop the video
stream (to get rid of black borders), add a soundtrack and have basic
editing (eg. fades at each end)... and possibly convert to MPEG...

Any recommendations? Can anyone help?

You may have a look on virtualdub.
