Docs open slowly when double clicked

I'd like to move our law firm off of WordPerfect and on to Word. The partners
won't do it until this problem gets resolved:
With Word running, if one double clicks on a .doc file it takes several
seconds before it opens. If one uses File > Open to open the same file it
opens instantly.
Renaming normal.dot seems to lessen the delay, but doesn't eliminate it.
Deleteing the registry key HKCU\software\microsoft\office\11.0 does not
correct the problem.
It makes no difference if the file is local vs. on the network. It makes no
difference if default printer is LTP or network print server.
The behavior is the same for Excel files as well, but I'd like to focus on
Word. It affects Word 2003 and 2007.
How can I eliminate the excruiating delay that results from double clicking
to open a Word document?

Well, I've resolved the problem. In our case it is because Word uses DDE to
open the file. I disabled DDE for .doc files and now they open instantly!
Destructions:
1. Go to Control Panel > Folder Options > File Types
2. Find and select Word Documents (DOC)
3. Click the Advanced button
4. Select Open in the Actions section
5. Click the Edit button
6. Uncheck "Use DDE"
7. Put your cursor on the "Application used to perform action:" box
8. Arrow all the way to the right and put in "%1" (include the quote
marks)
9. If there is a /dde remove it
10. Click OK, then OK, then OK
11. Try to open another document

If that works, then you may want to repeat the steps for other Office
document types (xls, ppt, docm (if using Office 2007), etc.).
