do I need to update defender?

R

robinb

I just upgraded my xp media center to Vista home Premium via Dell and I have
a different version than on my xp computers.
It is Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1505.0
Engine Version: 1.1.2503.0
Definition Version: 1.18.2628.1

Do I need to upgrade it or can it just be?
If i need to upgrade can I install it on top of it and do I get it at the
windows defender website?

thanks

Hi RobinB,

Have a look here:

I haven't checked out Engel's links, but the short answer is no--you don't
need to update except the normal definition updates. Your version of
Windows Defender does everything that the currennt XP version does and more.

I actually tried the update but it came back- this update is not for your
computer- no idea why that happened but if you are telling me i am fine then
i will leave it be

Well--I'm not sure what you tried, but that sounds fine.

I misspoke, in a way. There is:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931099

You can try this update to see whether it is applicable to your system--it
doesn't change detection capabilities, but improves automatic submission of
malware samples, as I recall. Doesn't change the version number, either.

As with other Defender downloads, that KB article lists two Vista
versions--a 32-bit version (the first one) and a version for "Windows Vista
for X64-based Systems."

If you downloaded that second one and got that message, try the first one.
(and vice-versa!)

OK - I don't know what that means, except that perhaps it indicates that you
already have that update in place.

If it is any consolation, I just downloaded the 32-bit version and tested on
my Vista machine, and I get the same result. There are no details of the
file changes in the KB article or download information, so I don't know of a
way to be certain that this update is, in fact, installed. I think I'll
just take the installers word for it!
