Windows Defender Error: 0x8050800c

Windows Defender consistently reports this error message when it attempts to
run a scan. The last successful scan was completed the day before the
definition version (1.23.4151.0) was updated. When I looked up the error
code, Microsoft said it meant "The system state prohibits the scan from
running in a specific user context." The suggestion is to restart and try
again, but this does not work. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?
(All the posts on this topic are outdated, and it seems their solutions do
not work either)

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate with Defender version 1.1.1505.0 and
Engine version 1.1.3007.0.

Hello AAGestal,

Try running CHKDSK

If it is a basic partition, other users with this error have found that
running a chkdsk scan on the partition has eliminated this error.

If it is dynamic, this error is a known bug

How to run Checkdisk at boot up CHKDSK

Thoughts:

See what happens after the next definition update.

Try scanning in safe mode.
