Windows Defender won't turn on in Vista Business (final release)

I just upgraded (not a clean install) from XP Pro to Vista Business (final
retail release)

Vista Business 6.0.6000 Build 6000
Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1505.0
Engine Version: 1.1.2101.0
Definition Version: 1.15.2227.3

Windows Security Center is telling me my Malware protection is Off.
Whenever I click the "Turn on now" button, Security Center does its Searching
for definitions and comes back with a message no new definitions were found.
But the Windows Security Center keeps saying Windows Defender is turned off.
All of my settings in the Windows Defender tools are set to the default
values and enabled.

How do I get Windows Defender to turn on in Vista Business?

Are you running either Windows Live OneCare, or Microsoft Forefront Client
Protection?

My only Vista machine is domain-joined, so the category symbols are not
visible in Security Center--I had thought that spyware protection and
antivirus protection were separated--and that you should show red for just
the spyware category?
(I'm trying to find the policy setting and turn it back on, but it's a slow
machine!)

I am having the same problem, i do not believe i am running any of those
items as it is pretty much out of the box. Running Vista Home Ultimate and
using sophos remote update as the anti-virus. other than that getting exactly
the same symptoms

Hi:
Here is how I do it in my VU 32 bit full install:
Go to Control Panel > System > Security Center (at lower left) > Malware
Protection > under Spyware and Other Malware Protection, click "Show me the
antispyware programs on this computer" > the pop-up window should show
Defender Off and WLOC On. If you don't use WLOC, gray out the Defender and
click Turn onbutton and then Close and exit.
Please note that if you are using Windows Live OneCare in Vista, you should
never ever enable Defender. WLOC does the Defender function, and having both
working at the same time will cause conflicts.

Thanks for the help, however In WU64 i dont see the "show me the antispyware
programs on this computer", however i have managed to confirm that defender
is running on my machine, it is just that it is somehow not recognising this
fact in the security centre.

Hi

I'm having the same problem in Vista Ultimate. I've had to install Windows
twice - the first time it was fine and recognised my AV software, now it is
not recognising either, although both appear to be running ok.

As long as they are running it is not essential, but if anyone has a
solution I'd love to know how to get rid of the warning message I receive
every few minutes.

Cheers

All,

Have a brand new Dell with Vista Home loaded on it from the factory and have
the same issues. Have Avast antivirus and Bitdefender coming up as not being
recognized by Vista Security Center - folks in other forums
(http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare/showpost.aspx?postid=1316604&siteid=2)
are having the same problems and the Microsoft guy there pointed me here.
Wish Microsoft would actually look at there forums and find a resolution and
have it posted - unless they really like wasting their customers time trying
to figure out their bugs.

There should be some manual solution to this (Registry fix or going through
an app) to manually point the program at the executable or file path to
correct these issues.

Can someone page Bill Gates and ask him how to do this?

Bob
