DNS migration thru zone transfer

Jun Soriano

Do I need to use local (Private IP) when migrating from
Windows NT DNS server to Windows 2000 using zone
transfer? Our Windows NT DNS is only using public IP and
I would like to know if they it should be connected in
LAN with the new Windows 2000 DNS server.

Thanks.

As long as there is some sort of network connectivity between the two
machines, then you can do a zone transfer, provided the transfer is allowed.
The only issue is with NAT, on the NT DNS (using the public IP), you would
have to specify the NAT extenal IP address to allow zone transfers to. In
the NAT device, you need to configure a port remap for TCP and UDP 53 to the
internal private IP.

address to allow zone transfers?

In the zone properties, zone transfer tab, allow to transfer to that IP
address.
