'Disk Cleanup' hangs...

I am running XP Pro on my Laptop. As I start 'Disk Cleanup' from my
Program Directory, it starts as usual, but it hangs....
It displays the following message :-
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
'Disk Cleanup is calculating how much space you will be able to free on
Drive (C). This may take a few minutes to complete'.

Calculating....

Scanning Compress old files.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

And then it hangs. I have waited for one full hour, but nothing happens...
Any Idea, what to do next? How do I make the Disk Cleanup active?
Please help.

P.S. Defragmenting is working OK.
