Disable APIPA in W2K Pro

I am trying to disable APIPA (on the entire computer) on Windows 2000 Pro by
following the steps outlined in KB article 244268
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;244268).

I have successfully created the registry key and set its value to 0
(disabled). After I reboot and run an "ipconfig /all", the output reflects
the Autoconfiguration Enabled = Yes. I have tested this on several PCs in
our lab with the same results. It appears that the registry key is working
but the output incorrectly indicates that the Autoconfiguration is enabled
regardless of the value of the
"HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\IPAutoconfigurationEnabled" key. Has anyone seen this before?

Thanks for the brainpower...

Seems to me I remember that happening on a computer of mine also. As long as
it works fine you should be OK but of course you will have to check the
registry to see if it really is disabled or not on a computer which is an
additional pain. --- Steve

Thanks for the reply. I have DHCP clients on the other side of a WAN link
(w/o a local DHCP server). The APIPA feature has caused us a little grief
because if the WAN link is down, the client PCs can't print to a local TCP/IP
printer once they automatically assign themselves an address. I am planning
to implement a group policy to disable the APIPA on these PCs. My
understanding is that they will continue to use the lease they last acquired
from the DHCP server.

Thanks again.
