Since getting XP my dial -up modem stops responding after a few minutes on the net.I disconnect from my ISP and reconnect. It works again for a few minutes or so and stopps responding again. My little screens are still up in the taskbar but not flashing, the status of my connection shows that I am still connected also but nothing works until I disconnect from my ISP and reconnect.Internet firewall is shut off.

Also ....Modem is not sharing IRQ with video card.Have tried other modems, etc.I have seen this problem posted on several sites but to my knowledge, no one has come up with anything that works

First thing ... you do not want to turn off the firewall , bad move. If
various modems do the same thing , you may have a virus / trojan that is
causing this , scan for viruses. Jym

Have you installed a XP driver for the modem ? Jym

Have scanned for virus with Norton 2004 and spyware with adware 6.0 and
spybot. All clear!I have even done a complete system recovery.Still get the
same thing. If I remove XP home and put Win 98SE in,it works fine.

Do you have a retail XP disk or a OEM that will allow a repair install ?
This procedure will not erase files , folders , or settings and may repair
what is creating your modem problems. A low risk proceedure. Jym

No ! It is a preloaded copy of XP with a HP compaq system.I have made recovery disc but loading them gives the same affect. I know of others who are having the same problem with XP though and theirs is a retail disc .

I recently built a new computer and run XP on it. I liked the modem I bought
and decided to upgrade the ISA modem on my old machine with the exact same
PCI model. I have no problems with the modem on my XP machine but I have
your problem on the W98 machine with the new modem. I have been working on
the problem a while now and I am not sure I have it licked yet, but the
latest fix looks promising so I'll share it with you now.
(If your computer is a new machine it most likely
has a newer V92 modem. These modems have "modem on hold" and call waiting
functions. If you have any line noise the modem will think it is a call
waiting signal but if your ISP is not set up to handle the feature it will
just disconnect. Why Dial Up Networking won't disengage is a mystery. I have
to reboot to gain control of DUN again.)
I found a couple of fixes that (so far) have helped a little. You can try
them for XP. They are my current XP settings:

Start>Settings>Control Panel
Network Connections
Select your ISP account> right click> Properties
Set "Idle Time Before Hanging Up" to "Never" (or an hour or a day or
whatever)
If it is set to 3 minutes then that would be your problem right there.

Then- Start>Settings>Control Panel
Phones and Modems>Modem Tab
Select your modem>Properties Button>Advanced Tab
Under "Extra Intitialization Commands" type: S10=100
(this will delay the modem time out for 100 seconds, you could make it 10 or
20, whatever)

Then- Start>Settings>Control Panel
Phones and Modems>Modem Tab
Select your modem>Properties Button>Modem Tab
Make sure your port speed is set to 57,600 if you have a 56K modem and ISP.

I can't promise that this will help but it shouldn't hurt. Try it and see.
The old W98 machine has been OK for 24 hours now.

I am trying your possible fix now,I will post results as soon as I get some.Everything was set as you said except the extra initialization commands were blank. We'll see! Thanks

BP.....Didn't work !
Bummer. That leaves you with unpleasant choices. But it will now be a
process of elimination. I'd try Jym's solution first. You have either a
operating system corruption (Jym's idea), an ISP problem (some modems are
quirky with some ISP's servers), a defective modem, a modem feature
conflict, or a driver corruption or conflict. Not fun. Or easy.
Sorry I couldn't help.

I am having a similar, though not exact, problem. I dial in to the ISP,
name/password gets verified, and I get the little icon in the systray and the
message that I'm connected at **.**kb/s, and then in about 1-2 seconds the
connection drops. I've change wait times, updated drivers, tried a different
ISP, put the card in a different PCI slot, and when I revert back to win98,
it works fine. I habitually disable the Modem On Hold crap.
It's a creative modem (model: DI3631), so I didn't expect to have any prob's
with it, but after spending hours on the phone with tech support from the
ISP, Creative, and the place I bought all comp. parts from (they weren't too
crazy about me calling) I finally talked to someone who seemed to know what
he was talking about. He said that XP is just picky about what it wants to
work with, and suggested I try a different modem. I just want to know which
one/ones will work before I drop more money on another one that won't!
Maybe if Jym or BP have a suggestion?

as horrible as it sounds, its nice to hear someone else with the same
problem, it is driving me insane. I have made umpteen calls to my isp
provider and millions of dial-up re-attempts,. sounds like we are having a
similar problem. i will keep looking about and hope that someone has a
victorious reply...goodluck danpa....

Me too! Exactly the same trouble. I have been advised to replace my modem,
but I haven't tried that yet. I don't really think that's the problem because
teh browser still thinks I'm connected.

Hi,

It's 99% certain, that you've got
spyware hogging the clock.

By any chance, are you using a
software modem ?

I ran the trialware version of
"Spyware Doctor" for awhile, and almost
all of these problems went away.
(Note that I STILL had to run
AdAware, Spybot, etc. occasionally.)

BUT - when the trial period
expired, it seems like the problems are
three times WORSE.
Maybe I'm just being paranoid about
PC Tools, but am I paranoid enough ?

Ken .
