Dial-up modem stops receiving data

I have Windows XP Home Edition SP1, up-to-date with the latest patches and
updates, installed on my laptop. I have a 56K SENS laptop modem that has
worked wonderfully for the last year, up until last night. Lately, the only
programs I've installed are Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and
Turbo Tax 2003 State Edition. My 56K internet connection has been working
fine up until now, but just last night, a problem occurred. I connected to
my ISP as I usually do and began browsing the internet. However, after
downloading (or receiving) 500 KB worth of data, my ISP connection just
stops receiving data. It still sends some, but it will not receive anything
else. I terminated that connection and tried to dial back in. I was able
to get back in, but the modem would not receive any data. At this point, I
rebooted the computer; once XP was loaded up, I went back to my ISP
connection, and got in fine as usual. However, just like the first time, at
around 600 KB of data, the modem stopped receiving.

I did this reboot and ISP connection multiple times and found that the modem
stops receiving data after receiving anywhere between 300 KB and 1 MB of
data. I tried to do a System Restore, but for some reason, my computer is
not letting me restore past last Saturday. I tried my desktop computer, and
it connects perfectly to my ISP without any restrictions. As a
complementary test, I dialed my work location from my laptop, and the same
300 KB to 1 MB restrictions still happen. This leads me to believe that it
is not my ISP or my phone line, but rather the TCP/IP files or registry
getting corrupted.

Any ideas to help me solve this problem? I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks,

B. Gray

Hi B Gray,

Tough problem you have. If you know the name and manufacturer of the
modem and have the drivers, you can try to uninstall and then reboot
and reinstall it.

Over the months I have had some problems with the modem that were
corrected reinstalling the modem drivers.

Hope this helps.
