i have a similar issue. i had to reintall xp and now can't get my monitor to
work through the nvidia geforce video card slot that i installed last year.
when starting up, the new slot works, then it switches to the old slot.
installing new driver doesn't fix the problem.

You need to install your video card drivers. You may have received the
Dell Resource CD with your computer. If you did, put it in the drive
and install all the drivers starting with the chipset, then the video,
then the others.

If you do not have the Resource CD, install the free Everest Home system
inventory program here:
http://www.lavalys.com/index.php?page=product&view=1

This will tell you what hardware you have in your system. Then go to
Dell's tech support website for your specific model computer and
download all the drivers.

This proble is common. To solve this, install the motherboard chipset
drivers (Dell Resource CD) and the include video card drivers.
