Desktop slow loading?

When i turn on my computer when it loads my desktop it is very slow,
the notification area icons load one by one very slowly. The start ->
programs only starts to load when i click on it. When i run a full
screen program and exit it or alt-tab out of it, the desktop isn't in
32mb colour it slowly loads back to normal taking about 30 seconds.
Because of this i have to try to run my programs in windowed mode
which runs fine but some programs don't allow windowed mode. I have
checked for spyware/viruses and i have found none, my computer has
enough memory etc so i can't figure out whats causing the prblem :
( any help will be much appreciated.

I have also looked at programs that load at startup but haven't found
any problems.

possibly it is due to no or little virtual memory
and i suggest to utilize the custom option
and set the virtual mem size at fixed values.

6. Change the Initial size value to 2 and the Maximum size value
to 1152, click Set, and then click OK.

click OK to close the System Properties dialog box and reboot.

It may be that a process is consuming almost all of the processor's capacity.
You can verify this by right clicking on the Taskbar and selecting Task Manager.
In the tab Processes check to see if one of the svchost.exe entries is running
the CPU value close to maximum range. If so, that's the problem and it's being
caused by a recent update and/or Windows installer. Here's a link to a procedure

You should only have to follow the initial steps in the procedure, e.g.,
download both the new Update Agent and applicable KB927891 file, close IE and
then install the new Update Agent and then install KB927891 and restart your
system.

If that doesn't solve the issue, post your problem scenario to the
microsoft.public. windowsupdate newsgroup. State what you already have done and
what the Task Manager is showing in CPU usage.

If it fixed the problem and nothing else is running, the System Idle Process
should be reading between 90 and 99 percent in the Task Manager.

I have 2GB of ram, at this moment CPU Usage is at a constant 1-2% with
several browser windows open and a download program.

when I turn my computer on it loads the desktop very slowly also. I do not
know what to do from here I have defragged etc. Can you help me with this?

Several things contribute to this:
1.) Is the disk volume that holds Windows "Dirty", Chkdsk C: will
indicate it's status.
2.) Too many Startups & Watchdogs ( Little programs that run at
bootup and appear in the System Tray ( next to the time display )
3.) Service Start failures, at bootup XP starts services which are
essentially programs without an interface (Window). Services
are interdependent and need other services to start before they
can. Run EventVwr.Msc and check the System Event log for
Red Icons ( that denote errors ). By default XP uses a 30-second
timeout value to wait on services to start.
