Desktop Icons

Whenever I create a program desktop Icon it appears with the .lnk extension.
Hence I cannot rename the file. If I try to delete the .lnk portion of the
icon name, I get the "open with" dialog box, and even if I pick the correct
exe file, the program will not run. I also lose the program icon. & get the
generic one.

Any Help ?
Thank You
John

How are you creating the Desktop Icon? If you right click on the desktop
and choose "New - Shortcut" - follow the steps and it should give you an
icon with the arrow in the lower corner and titled as you placed it in the
Wizard.

No matter what name I give it, the ".lnk" extension is appended.

What OS are you running? Are you using the steps I listed in my reply? I
would be glad to help, but short answers that don't answer the questions
don't seem to help. 8^)
Please list the steps *YOU* use to create the desktop icon.

Windows XP home
And yes i followed the steps in the Wizard exactly
I can also right click on the "exe" file & then send to Desktop & I still
get the "lnk" extension
Also I right click on the icon, drag it to the desk top & create shortcut,
and I still get the "lnk" extension.

Dragging the EXE to the desktop will always give you the LNK extension as
that is what it is - a LINK. The same with dragging the icon to the
desktop. If you right click an EXE and choose "Sent to Desktop (create
shortcut)" - this should give you the Icon on your desktop with a title
"Shortcut to program name" - which is what I assume you are trying to
accomplish.
Right clicking on an empty space on the Desktop, choosing New - Shortcut -
Browse to the location of the program you want to create the shortcut for -
select it and click OK - click Next - give it the name you want it to be -
click Finish - should give you what you are wanting.

Should, but doesn't! Still gives the ".lnk"

As Ron mentions, shortcut files are supposed to have the .LNK extension.
Normally, the .LNK part of the shortcut's name is hidden due to this
setting: Folder Options> View> Hide known file extensions.

When that box is unchecked (often recommended to do so), then desktop
shortcuts will display their .LNK extension. When you rename the file,
include .LNK at the end to avoid warning prompts from XP.

Or using Folder Options, you can hide that extension again. When you make
this change, you do not have inlcude .LNK when renaming a shortcut. The
operating system will automatically take care of the extension for you
(behind the scenes).

Hiding the extension in Folder options did what I was looking for!!!
Thank You Sharon
