Deleting graphics program ?

J

John Fitzsimons

Okay, suppose I have a folder with thousands of graphics in. What is
the best program that would allow me to quickly/easily scroll through
them and delete selected ones as I go ?

The most "basic" thing would be NOT to have a..

"Are you sure you want to delete this ?"

"Are you really sure you want to delete this ?"

"Are you really really sure you want to delete this ?"

"Are you really really really sure you want to delete this ?"

popup when pressing the delete key.

Being able to have the above AND to press the delete key
and * automatically * have the next graphic appear would
be the ideal.

Clicking the "next" button gets rather tedious after a few hundred
times. :-(

Does such a program exist please ?

Regards, John.

Irfanview would be my choice. Go to full screen and then just use the
arrow keys to move back and forth and the delete key to get rid of the
ones you don't want. You will have to go into the Properties and set
it not to show the Delete confirmation dialog windows.

I use Irfanview. Set up a Temporary directory (ie. 'Delete'). Load the
picture. When you get to one you don't want press F7 (Move file). Set
the first destination directory to 'Delete'. After that, each time you
get to a picture you want to delete just press F7,1. Use the
left/right cursor keys to go through the pics. Once you've gone
through all the pictures just delete the directory. The advantage to
doing this is you can sort the other pictures to nine other
directories while going through them

If your files are of the following types JPEG (any camera) TIFF
Canon EOS D30/D60/10D/300D and G2/G3/G5 (possibly others as well)
..crw/.thm raw files Canon EOS 1DmkII and 20D .cr2 raw files
Canon EOS 1D and 1Ds tiff-raw files Nikon .nef raw files
Fuji .raf raw files Olympus .orf raw files Minolta .mrw raw files

Then I would suggest Pixort V1.1.3 which is free. It was designed for
rapid sorting of a large number of files http://www.pixort.com/

CORRECTION free version only supports JPEG

Thanks. Yes, I have done that. I didn't like it because ;

(1) It doesn't like folders with thousands of graphics in on my
system.

(2) Deleting a file doesn't remove it from the display.

(3) Deleting a file doesn't advance the next graphic to replace it.

Regards, John.

Thanks. Yes, I do like it a lot. But there is no "delete" !!!

I can move files to a folder and then delete the contents but that
involves a step that I don't want to bother with. :-(

Okay as an "option" though. For people who want to double check
that they deleted correctly.

Still looking.

Actually, IrfanView does have an "auto next" option. Go to Option\Properties,
click the "File Handling" tab, and look at the Delete section. Put a check next
to "Jump to the next file on deleting/moving".

Confucious say .... fool should keep mouth shut, better than to open it
and remove any doubt.

1 .... your system, your problem, Irfanview likes 1000's here.
2 & 3 .... operator error (thats you) ...
Option/Properties, 'File Handling' tab, Delete section. Check 'Jump to
the next file on deleting/moving'

very well for me.

I've loaded folder with over 3500 images in them into Irfanny and it
didn't even bat an eye. It did take a couple of seconds to load them
all in the thumbnail window <smile>, but it did it. So any limitations
you are experiencing are a result of your 'puter, not the proggy.

The last two excuses you can rectify in the appropriate options window
easily.
