When I try to empty the Deleted Items folder I get an "unknown error has
occurred" message. In short, I can't delete items in the Deleted Items
folder. When I right-click and chose "empty folder" it deleted one item in
the folder but not all. Junk folder works fine. If I select items in the
Deleted Items folder and click delete the same error message pops up. Any
idea how to fix this?

I've tried this. It doesn't work!

The problem is when you delete the top message in the box.
The work around is to delete everything else first, then delete the top
message.

Easy!

I also am having this problem. It was fine a week ago, now all of a sudden,
it wont delete when I close Windows Mail, I finally got the dang deleted
stuff out, but before I did that, I went to my Sent Folder to delete that,
and all that got moved to the Deleted Folder, and now all that is stuck, I
can't get rid of it, nor a couple other deleted from inbox emails.

Does Microsoft even care that their software has major bugs in it? Seems
kind of strange that I have no problems till after the 90-day free tech
support it over. Now all these problems are popping up.

Didn't you bother reading any of the replies?
Microsoft issued a fix months ago.
Messages may be stuck in the Outbox when you use Windows Mail on a computer
that is running Windows Vista
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941090
It also works on other folders.

Have you tried this fix, downloaded and installed with Windows Mail not
running?

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Although it's labelled as for mail stuck in the Outbox, it also works in
other folders. If you don't know whether to use the 32-bit version or
the 64-bit version, try the 32-bit version first. Certain common
antivirus programs, such as most of those from Norton or McAfee,
or a recent one from Trend, tend to cause such problems, although
seldom immediately, so if you have such a program, remember
where to find the fix - you are likely to need it again.

I tried deleting the actual Deleted Items folder in Vista's Windows Mail
folder for my user.

It tells me I need permission to do that...

I'm the ONLY Administrator on this laptop, hell, the only user!

Thanks a lot Bill.

There are problems trying to delete any of the standard folders,
such as the Deleted Items folder.

You should be able to delete its contents, but not the folder
itself.
