Delete a workgroup?

P

Paul Knudsen

Here's the scene: we share a large house with several other tenants,
including my stepdaughter. We all share one cable internet
connection.

Recently, two other occupants got online with wireless, and at least
one showed up in our Windows Network Workgroup. We'd rather not give
him access to our shares.

We set up a new workgroup, but now the questions are:

1. How do we delete the old workgroup? Or at least prevent our
shares from showing up in it?

2. How do we control who can join the new workgroup? I don't recall
a password option.

3. If we need to go with some other kind of networking, which? TIA.

Anyone can access any machine in any workgroup regardless of the workgroups
name as long as the file and share permissions allow it and as long as they
can connect to the subnet. You are on the wrong track completely.

Start reading http://www.iss.net/wireless/WLAN_FAQ.php

Then learn about permissions in XP, obviously if you are using simple file
sharing that gives everyone access then you have a slight problem.

Good stuff here, will check it out. Thanks. Alas, we're running XP
Home so we may be screwed.
