network workgroup delete

Wagner

Recently we split the office network in two different groups
of people. Up to this week, everybody appeared at the same
network workgroup, so we could share printers, etc.

The network started to present some strange delays and
lockups, and then the XP machines frozen the taskbar, some
of them just disappeared the taskbar. When this happened,
we realize that several users were complaining about
computer problems, it seems something generalized in the
network.

Thinking about what could be, we decided to split people in
two workgroups, as if two different companies were sharing
the same network. In real it was just 10 machines, we split
2 of them to a new workgroup name. The main idea was to
reduce "visibility" and resources auto-search from XP, that
probably could be slowing machines down because one or
another was shutting down or something like that.

Well, created another workgroup, but I can't get rid of the
previous workgroup. When clicking global network I can
still see the other workgroup, and worse, I can even access
their printers or files if I want, and I don't want it
anymore.

How can I get rid and not see the other workgroup?

Thank you.
Wagner.

I'm sorry, but workgroups can't do what you want. As you've
discovered, they have no effect on visibility, and they don't provide
any type of security or access control.

To completely separate the two groups of computers, run each one
through its own network hub or switch, with no physical connection
between them.

A less secure way to separate them on one physical network would be to
assign a different TCP/IP subnet to each group of computers.
