Defragment

When i defragment my hard drive, there is a lot of white space in between
the blue contiguous files. Sometimes 24% of the drive defrags and it stops.
The hard drive is 20GB. Is this OK?

It stops because something is running. Maybe a screen saver.
The white space is normal.
