Default Monitor can't get back my monitor

lost monitor in tast mgr. In display properties,settings,
advanced,adapter info unavailable all the way down.
Adapter properties VgaSave, Device Non-Plug and Play
Drivers. Driver tab VgaSave, Startup Type "system".
Monitor Tab, Default Monitor, can't change properties!!
Running 2000 XP Home Edition Please Help! DESPRATE!!!

Reinstall your display drivers. Once those are installed, check to see if
the monitor is being identified correctly. If no, check the manufacturer's
website for an *.INF file for your model. After downloading, right click on
the *.INF file and select Install.

PS: Before reinstalling your display drivers, check Start> Run> MSCONFIG.
Look on the Boot.ini page. If /BASEVIDEO is checked, this is forcing the
use of the VGASafe driver. Remove the check. Restart the computer. If XP
does not reinstate the correct drivers for your display adapter after the
restart, reinstall them.

I am having EXACTLY the same problem if it makes you feel any better. I have not found a solution. I have downloaded driver updates, etc. Still cannot change default monitor and no settings available, etc. If you find solution, please, email and let me know. Otherwise, I will try to reformat and clean install. Thanks
