Monitor stuck at 640x480

Hi

Got sent a new computer with XP home instead of XP Pro by
Dell. They sent me an XP Pro CD and I have just
installed it - all works fine except screen is stuck at
640x480.

I have beem into Display Properties and the slider won't
move form 640x480 - the colour is stuck at Medium
(16bit). I've followed the advice that you get when you
click on the troubleshooting button and that is no good.
When I click on <advanced> and then the monitor tab - it
says Default monitor but the <properties> button is
greyed out so I can't change the monitor settings.

My partner has an identical machine and set up and when I
do this on her machine there are a load more options
available and her monitor properties read <plug and play
monitor/ standard monitor type/ Intel(R) 82865G Graphics
Controller. Why can't I set up mine like this?

Anyone got any ideas what I can do? Thank you. David

You don't need to install monitor drivers. You need to install the drivers
for your video card. You need to be logged on as an administrator to do
this. Use device manager, display adaptor properties, drivers tab. Select
update driver.

Hi It is very kind of you to try and help. I have
followed your advice but when I get to the display
adaptors it says I have Intel(R) 82865G graphics
controller (is this what you mean by a video card
driver?) and when I click on update driver it tells me it
is the most up to date version installed already -I've
tried downloading a driver form the Dell site to make
sure it is the latest version. Now what? David

you should have received a CD with the computer containing several drivers.
One of these will be the driver for the Intel graphics card. Look at the
contents of the CD and open the file referring to the Intel graphics card.
Its probably an .exe file and all you need to do is to double click it to
install the driver
