D-link DWL 650+ doesn't detect networks

Hi Folks,

I'm having problems with my D-link DWL-650+. I have this PCMCIA card
installed in a Toshiba Satellite A10-SP129. The 650+ isn't detecting
the 802.11b network in the area, which is WEP encrypted. I have another
card, a Proxim Orinoco Gold 8420-WD, which detects and connects to the
network just fine.

I've installed the latest d-link driver. I've tried finding the network
using windows, and using the d-link software.

There is only one network in the area, but i doubt it would see the
others if they existed.

Any ideas? Am I dealing with a dead card here, or is there something i
can do in xp sp2?

thanks,
allie

Make sure you are not trying to use the proprietary "turbo" mode.
how far are you from the router? What brand and model access
point/router are you trying to connect to? did this card ever work
before or is this new?

Hi Jack,

I've tried disabling windows control of the wireless card, and letting
the d-link utility find the network, to no avail. This card only works
with 802.11b - no g with this guy.

any other ideas?

thanks,

Hi Barb,

Thanks for the reply. I've disabled the "4x" mode in the D-link
configuration for the 650+. I have two routers - one is a di-624 rev.C,
which is the main router. I have another linksys wrt54g with dd-wrt
installed on it as a repeater. I'm a few feet from the repeater, and
about 20 feet from the main router. Both have the same SSID.

I've just recently been getting intermittent connections with the
wireless signals. When the card sees them, it sees both (one stronger,
of course). It will even occasionally connect (to the stronger one -
the linksys). But then the signals will drop out, and it will think
there are no networks in the area. I remember this happening before.

I do believe this card worked before, a while ago.

Any ideas are very welcome!

thanks,
allie

do you mean roaming as opposed to repeater? same SSID but different
channels?

Unless my terminology is mixed up, I think it's a repeater. Same
channel. Routes the traffic to the main router. Does not serve DHCP
addresses itself, etc.

Regardless, I don't think the problem is with the router set up. When I
unplug the repeater, the main router is still not detected.

thanks,

try a different channel for the router. could be interference. if
that works, reconfigure the repeater. also, please confirm that you
have changed the SSID from "default" or dlink or whatever.

is the wireless detected as you walk closer to the router?

Hi Barb,

Thanks for the continued help. The SSID is different than the default,
and neither changing channels nor walking closer to the router helps. I
suspect it's a faulty card.

Thanks,

I am writing this letter to ALL Wireless Router manufacturers.
I have a Linksys Wireless Router Model:BEFW11S4. It is 7 years (yes, count
them, all of seven little years) old. I have visited the Linksys website
numerous times trying to set up the WEP/WPA security on that wireless router
(as all responsible wireless router owners should!). I found that there are
no links to any wireless router setting websites that are congruent with the
screen shots from Linksys' own self help technical support site. I have had
to call Linksys several times to resolve this issue only to be placed on hold
for lengthy times (sometimes my call was dropped and I had to start over ....
how sad for such a large company to have such poorly trained phone
receptionists!), then be transferred (see previous comment about the phone
receptionists) to a supposed supervisor, only to finally be transferred to
someone who tells me that the warranty has expired and wants me to pay $40.00
for the technical support to do the right thing that I want and need to do.
First, the device works fine (as evidenced by this e-mail that you have
just received)!
Second, why should I have to pay for doing the right thing?
Third, if I am going to be EXTORTED into buying a new wireless router so
that I can do the right thing and set up an encryption key for a secure
network, what on Gods' Green Earth makes anyone think that I would CHOOSE to
buy another Linksys product when ALL that I have ever received from them is a
functional wireless router (yes, even after seven whole years) and the
crappiest Customer Service/Technical Support I have ever had the displeasure
to encounter!
I shall copy this letter and try to find as many Chat Rooms as possible in
order to spread the word of ALL that I have gone through with the Chain of
Command at the Linksys phone center, well above and beyond what any
reasonable person should expect to go through, and still have NO RELIEF
concerning my singular issue with their product and its capabilities that I
SHOULD be able to enjoy as the owner of said product! What has happend to
"The Customer Is Always Right" Customer Service mantra (I can't say "In
America" because the call was handled in India)? Is the Customer, the ones
that makes the company what it is through the purchase of products, so
worthless to the company that they can just be treated with abject contempt
and scorn? Is the Customer to thus be trampled underfoot? Are we paying to
be so abused? I, for one (yes, one, the beginning of all), shall NOT be
treated in such manner, and CERTAINLY shall NOT PAY to be treated as such!
In this world of expanding technologies, it shall be those with the
GREATEST Customer Appeal that shall continue to be found worthwile in the
publics' eyes (and pocketbooks) and shall grow to meet the demands of a
growing world - ESPECIALLY in the Electronics Department!
It is now my strongest desire that the Linksys Corporation suffers
irreparable damage and goes out of business for their Crappy Customer
Service! I can only hope that I reach enough people around the world to bring
this desire true!

I believe all you're going to accomplish is to make yourself perhaps the
"Most Blocked Person on the Internet". There are a number of technical
support services available from Linksys not the least of which include
public forums for the posting of questions and comments, and complete
instructions and manuals for your product.

For what it's worth, seven years old in computer years means "should have
been retired at least half that lifetime ago". The only protocol that
router supports is WEP (can't do WPA, never could, never will) and WEP can
be hacked by anyone with a search engine and about five minutes in range of
your router. If you are serious about securing your network you need to
dump that router and get one with modern security technology included.
