Customizing File Open dialogue

At "http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm" I found listed "85. Set
Detail View for all Folders Open/Save As", which takes me to
"http://www.cottonwoodsw.com/fx3summ.html". There I can find a utility
called "File-Ex" which costs ~$20 and which appears to provide the capability
to do something I've looked for in the Windows XP forums and haven't found.
What I'd like to do is have an application's Open File dialog default to the
Detail View, be sorted by modification date in reverse order, and not have
the "Size" and "Type of File" columns obstructing my view of the modify date.
Have I overlooked a way of doing this which does not involve investing in a
utility like "File-Ex"?

I have tried this on Open dialogue box of Microsft Word. Usually it will work
on other programs too:
1. File menu > Open
2. On the Open dialogue box, sort the files in details.
3. On the size column header drag the the right divider to the left until
it almost touches the left divider (a distance of about 1/16 of an inch). It
must not touch the left divider. Do the same to the Type header
4. Click the Date Modified Header until the files are sorted the way you
like it.
5. Press the Control key then click the red X button (top right) to close
the dialogue box. The next time you open the dialogue box it should retain
the settings.

Or you can just increase the width of the dialogue box instead of item of 3
above. To do this put the mouse cursor on the right border of the dialogue
box and drag it to the right.
