View in file select dialogue?

What controls the view in the file select dialogue box used by lots of
programs? As when you choose "File Open in WordPad?" For I don't know how
long, these dialogue boxes have been presenting the folders and files in
some unknown order. Possibly date of last change??? Anyway, not
alphabetical. Also, I prefer to see them in "detail" format, and I always
have to explicitly select that. My regular Windows Explorer behaves
properly in that regard and alos presents things in alphabetical order.
SAVE AS behaves the same way.

Interestingly, Word presents the files in alphabetical order and now seems
to "remember" that I wanted to see the "detail" format. Most programs,
however, show the same muddled list.

Change the file sorting in the Windows Explorer to something else and
then back to alphabetical. Press CTRL while you close the Explorer
window. This may fix the sorting in the dialog box.
The box is not customizeable. That means, you cannot change the default
view here (List).

It must be a file folder not a special folder like My Computer. My Docs is fine.
