Cursor has a mind of its own!

Every now and then my cursor takes off on its own. I have run AVG, Spybot,
and Adaware. I have also used an online virus scan from Trend-micro.
My Dell laptop (Inspiron 2650) is now clean as far as these tests show but
the cursor still moves on its own. I'm stumped, any ideas?

my idea: flaky hardware...

if the mouse is wireless it could be interference, if optical it could
be something on the surface you're using it on or just odd drivers
(i've seen a perfectly still optical mouse display a very obviously
jittery cursor)... if it's a totally conventional mouse it could be a
short in the wire...

Odds on you have a hardware problem. Try a different mouse &/or keyboard
(depending on the type of cursor movement). A bad cable, or bad key, or
sticking switch, can give all sorts of interesting results.

Viruses, these days, are much more subtle, and have much better things
to do with your PC than screw around with the cursor.

If it is cordless, are there any other cordless mice around? Often the
recommend spacing between cordless mice is 12 to 15 feet (but that's not
practical between desktops in cubicles) but I've seen cordless mice
interfere with each other at over 30 feet away (and which was up one
floor, too). Press the sync button on the receiver and then on the
mouse to see if the problem goes away.

P.S I do have Zone Alarm installed as well.

Have you tried cleaning it? The ball and rollers inside pick up a lot
of dirt/lint/youdon'twanttoknow and need regular cleaning of the mouse
will start acting up as you describe. Unplug it first. Rubbing alcohol
is the best cleaner.

Dohhh! I should of thought of that. I will uninstall and reinstal the
mouse that should do it. It is a corded mouse, cable in good shape. I
put it on my wifes computer with no problems.
I was thinking that someone might of hacked into my computer but ZA
shows nothing out of the ordinary.

I've had strange behaviour even with optical mice - frayed cables, bad
contacts at the plug - still plenty to go wrong. On some occasions I've
even found complaints about it in the WinXP event logs.

I had a similar problem with my optical mouse. All I had to do to correct
it was to replace the mouse pad with a plain mouse pad. For some reason,
the design on the mouse pad can confuse the optical scanner resulting in
jumping all over the place. Hope this helps.
