CRYPTUI.dll NOT FOUND...

Hi,

I went to startup my computer as usual this morning and I received a message
that my video card cable was not connected properly, so I turned off my
system and made sure everything was plugged in securely. My computer started
as normal, then I got this message before Windows XP loaded my desktop...

-------------------------------------------------
Explorer.exe- unable to locate component
-------------------------------------------------
(x) <---RED X

This application failed to start because CRYPTUI.dll was not found.
Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

I have Windows XP Pro w/ Service Pack 2

Any suggestions? Should I just insert my Win XP Install CD and perform a
REPAIR?

Thanks,
Mike

I'd also like to add that I don't want to lose any data, software, etc.

I was in the process of backing up my files last night...no surprise this
bump in the road had to come along!

Thanks,
Mike

Hi
Try running the following command from Start>Run type in "sfc /scannow"
without the quotes,
Have your XP CD handy, it may ask for it
this should replace critical system files

2 things:

#1) I attempted to perform a REPAIR INSTALLATION to try and fix the problem
and NOTHING happened. Everything is exactly the same...the 'CRYPTUI.dll not
found' message comes up, where my desktop doesn't load.

#2) I tried Chas' recommendation...."Start>Run> sfc/scannow"
-Since I cannot log into Windows, I attempted to start in SAFE MODE
-when attempting SAFE MODE, I received the 'CRYPTUI.dll' message
again.
-I also attempted to run SAFE MODE w/COMMAND PROMPT
-the command prompt came up and I typed in 'sfc/scannow' and got
this:

:::Windows File Protection could not initiate a scan of protected
system files.
The specific error code is 0x0000006ba [The RPC server is
unavailable]:::

So, that's where I'm at right now. The above suggestion didn't work, and
the repair install didn't work. I cannot start Windows in SAFE MODE under
Administrator or my personal name.....

I don't want to lose any data either. Any suggestions? I'm not sure what
else I could possibly try.

Is there somewhere I can download the CRYPTUI.dll file from and somehow
put it onto my computer? I don't know how I'd do this though, because I can't
even start the system.

Hi
I can't understand with a repair install you said "nothing happened"
I know some OEM XP disks do not allow repair installs
Look here http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
Read through it first
You can download cryptui.dll here
http://www.dlldump.com/download-dll...s/C/cryptui.dll/5.131.2600.2180/download.html
Also this may help when you tried to run 'sfc /scannow' remember the space

Hey Chas,

I really appreciate you sticking with me here.

When I said that nothing happened after the repair install....here's
what happened....

The Win XP Pro CD went through the repair install which took about 15
minutes. It said that everything was successful. Upon restarting my computer,
the same error message concerning CRYPTUI.dll came up. That's what I meant
when I said nothing happened...pertaining to the original issue still not
being resolved after attempting the repair install.

As for the sfc / scannow feature, I negelcted to put a space before and
after the sfc and scannow. The following then came up on my screen in cmd.exe:
-------------------------------------------
/SCANNOW
/SCANONCE
/SCANBOOT
/REVERT
/PURGECACHE
/CACHESIZE=x

(this was under SAFE MODE COMMAND PROMPT for starting up since I cannot
enter into WINDOWS under SAFE MODE....the following line appears...)

C:\Documents and Settings\Mike> *****here I typed /SCANNOW******

then received this message:

'/SCANNOW is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable
program or batch file.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, that's where I'm at right now. I'd like to give this scan thing a try
and see if it does the trick. Any suggestions?

Hi again Mike
You can try System Restore
from Safe Mode with command prompt
that is if there are any restore points after your repair install
anyway worth trying
1. Boot to Safe Mode with Command prompt
2. Close Command Prompt "just click the top right hand x"
3. Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to bring up the Task Manager
4.Click File > New Task (Run)
5. Type In "C:\WINDOWS\system32\Restore\rstrui.exe" without the Quotes
"presuming C: is your boot drive"
6. OK
7.Check Restore to an earlier time> Next "then choose a restore point prior
to the time you had trouble"

Hey Chas,

Tried your last suggestion for System Restore. Everytime I typed in a '\'
i'd get a beep with the CRYTPUI.dll error. Then when I clicked OK, I got the
same error. I tried it again, regardless of it not working after the first
attempt, and the System Restore window opened, but was all white and never
loaded anything. Is there a way to get the dll file out of my system32 folder
and replace it with a new one? Or to add one if it's not detecting one?

Thanks

I tried another Repair Install.....and realized that it never completed the
first time. After replacing all the files, Windows is supposed to reboot and
finalize the installation. Well, it turns out that any time Windows goes past
the Windows XP loading screen (with the big XP logo in the center of the
screen), that an error occurs. As it goes past the Windows loading screen, I
get the red moving box across my screen that says that Video Mode is not
supported or something. So I unplug my monitor connection and replug it, and
then all I see is a blank screen with my mouse (enlarged) and not moving.
Then I wait and wait and nothing happens. The repair install never completes.
I don't know what to do. Things are looking bleak. I can't start in SAFE
MODE. None of the recommendations worked to repair anything, and I can't
successfully complete a repair install due to the problems that I keep
experiencing. I may have to purchase yet another hard drive. Think I should
post to another thread and see if anyone else had any other ideas?

Thanks a lot for your help,
-Mike
