DLL error prevents me from using Windows...please help...

Hi, since yesterday morning, I've experienced a problem with my computer. I
turned it on with a beeping sound that sounded and my screen said that my
video card was not connected. So I shut down and made sure everything inside
my tower was plugged in properly and securely. I then attempted to start my
computer and received the following message right after the Windows loading
screen passed (right before the desktop loads):

-------------------------------------------------
Explorer.exe- unable to locate component
-------------------------------------------------
(x) <---RED X

This application failed to start because CRYPTUI.dll was not found.
Re-installing the application may fix this problem.
____________________________________________________________

I have Windows XP Pro w/ Service Pack 2

I received suggestions from 1 person yesterday, to which we couldn't
find a solution. Here are the facts so far:

1) I cannot start in SAFE MODE

2)A Repair Install with Win XP Pro w/ SP 2 disc was attempted 2 times,
and unable to complete after reboot to finalize everything (b/c after the
Windows loading screen and before the desktop loads, I received a red
floating box from my monitor saying something about VIDEO not detected or
something...so I unplugged and replugged my monitor, but then the screen is
just blank with an enlarged mouse pointer that doesn't move, and the
finalization of the Repair Install cannot complete)

3)A System Restore was attempted after entering SAFE MODE W/ COMMAND
PROMPT, Xing out the cmd.exe window, pressing CTRL+ALT+DLT to open the TASK
MANAGER, and attempting to manually get to the System Restore feature...I
kept receiving the message about CRYPTUI.dll not being found.

4)Attempted to type 'sfc /scannow' in safe mode w/ command prompt
(cmd.exe) and nothing worked there.

I don't know what else to possibly try. Any suggestions from anyone
would be helpful. I'm afraid I'll have to just buy a new hard drive and
install windows onto there as I cannot lose any data on my current hard drive
(I was in the process of backing it up 2 days ago...go figure).

If you want history of my previous post that had 1 person kind enough to
respond w/ suggestions, it was titles 'CRYPTUI.dll NOT FOUND'

My operating system is Windows XP Pro w/ SP2
I have an ATI video card (ALL-IN-WONDER-PRO)
ABIT Motherboard

(i can try and get more specifics if needed...computer was not constructed
by a manufacturer such as DELL, GATEWAY, etc..)

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

viDon't know if video error is related to file problem!!
Do you have on board video, also?
If so, You may want to enable onboard video in BIOS and connect Monitor to
the onbrd video port.

Can copy file from another computer if possible from C:\windows\system32 to
your C:\windows\system32 folder
OR expand copy from Windows CD ( in I386 folder).

Still don't know about your video issue. Need to troubleshoot some more.

I don't have video on my motherboard. it's separately connected. Also, I
don't think the video is the issue here....i thought it may possible be
connected. Either way, I can't get into windows in safe mode or any other
way, and I don't know how I could even attempt to put the CRYTPUI.dll file
into my system 32 folder if I can't even access the folder.

You can run System Restore from command prompt!!
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Restore\rstrui.exe

Mike,

Searched my system files for Cryptui.dll, no file found, searched the ati
website, googled, symantec , no luck. Before tossing your harddrive,go to the
manufacturers website and download their diagnostic tools for on a floppy and
test your drive. also reset your bios and see if that helps. Most
manufacturers have a utility to format their drives which will enable you to
reload if needed as a last resort.

Use Win XP CD and boot up to Recovery Console. expand the file from \I386
folder to Windows\systen32 folder

check Help and Support center for expand command.

Dixonian, I tried to open Rcovery Console through SAFE MODE W/ COMMAND
PROMPT, but after I typed in the code, I received the same message about
CRYPTUI.DLL not being found...therefor, nothing happens.

I'm attempting the Recovery Console EXPAND feature, but I don't think I'm
typing in everything correctly. Here are my options as given by the Recovery
Console:

--------------------------------------------------------
EXPAND source [/F:filespec] [destination] [/Y]
EXOAND source [/F:filespec] /D

source Specifies the file to be expanded. May not include wildcards.

destination Specifies the directory for the new file. Default is the
current directory.

/Y Do not pomprt before overwriting an existing file.

/F:filespec If the source contains more than one file, the parameter is
required to
identify the specific file(s) to be expanded. May include
wildcards.

/D Do not expand; only display a directory of the files which
are
contained in the source.

The destination may be any directory within the system directories of the
current Windows installation, the root of any drive, the local installation
sources, or the cmdcons directory.

The destination cannot be removable media.

The destination file cannot be read-only. Use the ATTRIB command to remove
the read-only attribute.

EXPAND prompts if the destination file already esists unless unless /Y is
used.
----------------------------------------------------------

Then I have the line:
C:\WINDOWS>_

I'm not sure what to type. Everything I typed received an incorrect
response, reporting that the command is not recognized.

My main drive is my C drive. The file should be expanded to my
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 folder i believe. The file needed is CRYPTUI.DLL

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Also, Whitecougar, I was able to find the CRYPT.DLL file while searching
GOOGLE, and it's also on my brother's computer.

You have to boot from Win XP CD to accesss Recovery Console UNLESS Recovery
Console is installed on your hard drive. If so, the computer has a dual boot
option where Recovery console is one option.

So boot from Win XP CD.

I AM booting from the WIN XP CD. My question pertained to what CODE I should
be entering for the EXPAND feautre. I typed out the entire screen for EXPAND
in my last post! Please see it for an example.

Also, I just tried putting my drive into my brother's computer which is the
same as mine, and wanted to try adding the CRYPTUI.DLL file into my system32
folder that way, but my system32 folder is unavailable in my brother's
computer. Is there any way to get around this or replace the file through my
brother's computer (with my drive connected inside his)?

Does the current OS Drive only contain a system32 folder?
