Critical Update (KB885 884)

Gerry

Hi,
I am being prompted to install "Critical Update for Windows XP, Service Pack
2 (KB885884) 5.1 MB " on my laptop with limited HD-space. I do not have
Office installed, instead I use MS-Works Suite 2001.
SP 2 installed without a hitch from CD 2 weeks ago.
Do I really need this update?
Thanks for your thoughts,
Gerry

You need this update only if the following conditions are true:

• Your computer requires the 832332 security update, the 831932 security
update, or the 831931 security update.

• You previously installed the original version of the 832332 security
update, the 831932 security update, or the 831931 security update that was
released on September 14, 2004.

• The original version of the 832332 security update, the 831932 security
update, or the 831931 security update did not correctly update the Mso.dll
file in your %Programfiles%\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Office10 folder.

MS-Works Suite includes Microsoft Word. Since Word is a component
of Microsoft Office, you *do* have Office installed (at least
part of it), and that's why you need the update.

You should install it. Some Office components are in other Microsoft
software as well. Better just to do it than try to outguess MS.
