I had the same problem as Kevin's. The update was
resurrecting despite several installations and reboots.
So I tried the steps 2 thru 7. Here is an account of the
exercise.

First, the name of the program to remove was listed
as "Windows Media Player Hotfix [See wm828026 for more
information]." This wasn't very clear from the
instructions, but I removed it anyway.

Second, there was no registry key named "wm828026," but
there was one named "Q828026" (under the same path as
given in the instructions). I tried to apply the patch
twice: first without deleting this key, then with this
key deleted. In both cases, I was careful to follow the
steps, and did remove the Hotfix and reboot the machine
before the second trial.

Unfortunately, the update is still deemed necessary by
Windows Update (I forced scans after each trial). In the
registry there does seem to be another Q828026 key in the
registry under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Media
Player\SP0. Should this be deleted also?

Thanks.

What operating system?
You are manually downloading the update and then installing by double
clicking the icon?
Uninstall patch
Delete any 828026 and then reinstall manually.
