crash...CrasH...CRASH!!!!

Hello all,
THanks in advance to all those who help. Well tonight I decided to check my
email in Outlook and it would not open. It kept crashing, telling me it
needed to close. I submitted it to Windohs and it told me it was my Norton
Internet Security, specifically my Norton Anti Spam. So I uninstalled Norton
to see if it would fix it. Upon restart it worked, Outlook that is (to a
point--red X's) but now both my MSN Messenger and IE crash everytime. When I
open my IE, the fonts are all screwed and it cannot display any pictures,
only those evil little red X's, that is it. When I click to go to Windohs
Update, it crashes immediately. I have scanned my PC, got rid of all the
Norton files and restarted many o times but this still persists. Any clues or
ideas would be oh so greatly appreciated. Cheers!

Hi CHOUT :)

You do not say what programs you scanned with, but, you have a hijacker,
malware, spyware or parasites on your system causing this problem. Thus, in
addition to running your updated anti-virus program, you should do the
following to be sure none of these are present on
your system. Although you may have already run one or more of the programs,
please do so again according to the instructions below. Some variants of
malware can replicate themselves over and over if not removed properly.
Please follow all instructions carefully to be sure your system is
thoroughly cleaned:

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Be sure to run CWShredder, Ad-aware and Spybot.
If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.
(or Spybot - Search and Destroy DSO Exploit Fix 1.3.1 TX)
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4392.html
Also be sure to use the HijackThis. Please do not post your log to this
newsgroup, but to the HiJackThis Support Forum
http://www.hijackthis.de/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=10&guestlanguageid=4
or the Aumha HiJackThis forums
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30
to allow the experts there to evaluate your log and advise you of the
necessary steps to clean your system.

Also this program searches for hidden .dlls that recreate the malware.

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of the programs
below, download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

Also, get a copy of WINSOCKXPFIX available at:

and

will fix this problem without the need for these programs.)

Download Sysclean.com, from Trend Micro, here:

file, here:

Be sure to read the "How-to" info here:

You might also want to get Art's updater, SYS-UP.Zip, here for future
updating of these: http://home.epix.net/~artnpeg/.
(If you download and use the updater from the beginning, it will
automatically handle downloading the other files. Place them in a dedicated
folder after appropriate unzipping, and then run. This scan may take a long
time, as Sysclean is VERY extensive and thorough

and......

NOTE: If you can not download these programs from the Internet, if your PC
has CD read capabilities, go to another computer with CD-ROM burning
capabilities. Create a folder on the hard drive of the other computer called
HOLD, download the programs to that folder, then burn that folder to a CD.
Copy the HOLD folder to your HD and then install the programs from there
and run them. After you have IE access again, update all programs where
possible to get the latest definitions and run them again in Safe Mode to be
sure there are no lingering items on the system.

We need more information to be able to help you. Click on the details button
(or details link) when your system crashes and provide:

xxx caused an xxx in xxx at xxx:xxxx

or if you are using a later operating system, provide information about the
files (modules) involved in the crash.

If you are using the Error Reporting Tool, disable it so you can access the
error message in a more understandable form. Informationon how to disable
the Error Reporting Tool is here:

Hi Sandi,

Cheers for the help. Here is the info when it crashes. I tried to go to that
page you linked below but it crashes everytime I try to =( Here is the info:

C:\DOCUME~1\BOBENIS\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER71f4.dir00\iexplore.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\BOBENIS\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER71f4.dir00\appcompat.txt

I am assuming after I uninstalled Norton Internet Security, it deleted some
necessary files or left them incomplete? I am wondering if I can replace them
or fix them? Maybe there are files which are screwed in the registry? Some
pages dislay ok with an odd font while others are nothing but red X's. My
eBay page does not display well at all...the fonts are huge and nothing but
those X's. Same with cbc.ca until I click on a link in cbc and then that link
is fine. Really odd but I am sure it is tied to Norton in some way. Hope the
above messgae helps you to help me. Cheers once again Sandi!

Restart the machine and immediately empty the Temp folder.
Then
First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

Hello Frank,

Thanks for the help but those programs did nothing. I tried them and the
crashing still persists as usual on both my Messenger and IE. Any other
clues? I hope this post will be seen as it is being slowly engulfed into the
recesses of the Microsoft newsgroup archives...lol. Cheers!

Longtime/ongoing bug on MSN's end.
http://groups.google.com/groups?q="...up=microsoft.public.*&c2coff=1&sa=G&scoring=d

Fixes:

1. Use a non-MSN homepage

2. Use www.member.msn.com as homepage (requires sign-in)

3. Sign in to MSN Messenger (.NET Passport) first.

4. Upgrade to MSN Messenger v6.2.0137 in WinXP SP2

Thanks for the help Jan but it did not work. I went through my registry and
deleted every Norton and Symantec file. Restarted, deleted my temp folder and
still MSN and IE are crashing. It all started after I uninstalled Norton IS
2005. I suppose IS permits or blocks all net based applications and now that
it is uninstalled, it is possible that those applications or the IS file(s)
are still attached to those applications and are stopping them from accessing
the net? Not sure...maybe I should run the XP repair...and then install SP2
all over again...good times....

Sorry it did not work for you. Sometimes, after so many efforts, it is best
to fall back, regroup and start fresh. One other thing I can think of that
you might try, is to disable the ActiveX Control before trying to access MSN
with MSN Messenger open, if you haven't done that already, and it applies.
This has helped a few folks with such a problem.

Tools>Internet Options>Security>Custom Level>check the Disable under the
ActiveX Control and plug-ins section.
