corrupt c_1252.nls upon startup

i have a fairly complicated problem in hand right now,
which is gonna take me a while to explain.
This morning i started the disk defragmentation and then i
left for work. When i came home to check on the computer,
it was frozen so i press "alt-del-ctrl" to try to restart
it but the computer had no response so i restarted the
computer manually.
As the computer restarted, a message output to the screen
saying "Windows could not start because the following file
is corrupted : \Windows(root)\system32\hal.dll". Then i
followed the online procedure available on
support.microsoft.com and tried to fix the problem using
the recovery setup cd-rom disk.
After following all the instructions, i restarted the
computer again. This time it gives me another
error: "Windows could not start becasue the following file
is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\system32\c_1252.nls".
Then also i tried fix that by following the instructions
in here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?
scid=kb;en-us;830088
However, this time i couldn't even find
the "WINDOWS\system32\" directory in my drive....i'm
totally lost in what i'm doing right now. Does anybody
know how to fix this problem?? I'm tempted to just
reformat my computer, but i couldn't because i have some
important documents that i haven't done backups yet.
Please..any help is highly appreciated..

When you boot from the install disk follow the procedure
for installing XP again, then choose the same drive your
current installation is on. When you do this, if your
current installation still exists it will give you the
option of repairing you current installation. Choose
this. This will reinstall XP over your current
installation. Note-you will have to reinstall any updates
since your release came out. If no windows installation
is detected. . .stop here. In that case, if you have a
blank drive or partition (or one with data you are willing
to sacrifice) install windows there and attempt to access
your drive that wy to recover your files. If these
options don't work for you, look in the phone book for a
data recovery specialist.
