Corrupt Address Book

S

Stewart

Outlook Express 6.0 on XP home loads fine. Incoming mail
fine.
When trying to load the address book either for new mail
or adding contacts( or trying from Accessories menu),
gives error. "An error occurred while trying to open the
address book". I have copied a new copy of the .WAB file
to the system with no luck. I have uninstalled and re
installed express.

Help appreciated.

Is MS Outlook (or MS Office) also installed? See
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/wab.htm#share,
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=191946 and
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=269777.

Do you have this Registry key?...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
\Software
\Microsoft
\WAB
\WAB4

Is there a DWORD named UseOutlook and is its value set to 1 (one)?

If so, Address Book is configured to share contacts with Outlook, even if
you don't use it (can happen with the install of Office). Change the value
to 0 (zero), Address Book should be available to you and all should be well.
(If that DWORD is not present, don't create it.)

Maybe it's just the security discriptor (?) that's corrupt. Navigate to the .wab file, right click it, click Properties, click the Security tab and check if your user name has modify or write privilege. To change the setting, see note to "creata cart" a couple postings after yours.

THANK-YOU-- Your are a wizard among wizards. Outlook is
installed as well as express. There was a (1) in the
registry. Once set back to zero(0) everything is fine
These forms are great.....
