Copying Old Registry to New Installation

R

Robert

I'm trying to repair a Windows 2000 Pro system that won't
boot. A faulty installation of the VIA UDMA IDE controller
corrupted the primary and secondary IDE controllers. The
boot log indicates that ACPI isn't loading, even though
it's enabled in the BIOS.

I tried uninstalling all four controllers so I could
reinstall the primary and secondary controllers, but now
the system won't boot. The Last Known Configuration didn't
fix the problem, and neither did the EBD floppy. I tried
an emergency repair using the 4 installation floppies, and
also a complete reinstall. Nothing has enabled me to boot
the system.

My last option is to install the OS on a separate HDD and
copy selected files/programs from the old disk to the new
one. I could do a complete export/import of the registry
onto a Ghosted image, but I'm afraid that might copy the
same problem to the new drive. I'm wondering how to do a
select export/import of the registry, copying everything
except the HKEYS directly responsible for booting the
system.

Does anyone know what keys I should NOT export from the
old disk that will allow me to safely boot the new disk
while maintaining the original programs and Windows
settings?

Thanks for your help!

It simply isn't worth the trouble to attempt something like that. Backup
your data, blow it away and start a new install. In the end you'll be
pleased that you did.
