Copy printer

In Windows XP, I could copy a printer icon to create two instances of the
printer, each with different settings. For example, one could be defaulted to
high quality printing; the other defaulted to fast/economical printing.
Unfortunately, in Vista, the copy feature doesn't seem to be available (using
Ctrl-C/Ctrl-V or by right-clicking, which doesn't haven't Copy on the pop-up
menu). Does anyone know of a way to duplicate a printer setup icon so that I
can create two printer configurations for the same printer but with different
settings? If it helps to know, I have an HP OfficeJet 7210 All-In-One and am
using the HP's Vista drivers.

Thanks in advance,
Joey

I do not believe you can copy printers in Windows XP or Vista.
What you need to do is install a new driver for the printer with a unique name
and set the two drivers you now have to whatever settings you need. It may be
wise to rename the existing driver before you install the printer for the
second time.

Alternatively, when you make a new template adjust the printer settings for
that one and then when you save changes any docs from that template will use
those printer settings. Anything printed from all other templates will use
the default printer settings. This can be repeated for all templates, they
could all retain a particular printer setting.

Joey,

I'm unable to copy/paste printers (using Ctrl+C Ctrl+V) on XP or Vista & am
pretty sure this is not implemented.

For local printers, you can run the APW and install them more than once.
This would create a printer something like "HP OfficeJet 7210 All-In-One
(Copy 2)". Since these print queues have different names they are different
printers to the spooler & can have different settings as you described in
your mail.

If you want to create a duplicate via the Add Printer wizard try these
steps:
1) Install the printer normally for the first queue. Print a test page to
make sure everything is working correctly. (you may have done this already)
2) Right click on the printer queue icon in the printers folder & select
properties
3) Select the Ports tab. What you want to see is the port name that is
checked. This will be something like "USB001" "Virtual printer port..." "HP
OfficeJet 7210..."
4) Start the Add Printer wizard.
5) Select the local option.
6) On the port drop down, find the port you saw on step 3.
7) On the driver page, select the appropriate driver for your device.
8) It will ask you if you want to replace or use the installed driver. I'd
use the installed one, but this shouldn't make a big difference either way.
9) You'll be allowed to rename the printer.
10) Print a test page if you wish to test it out.
