Converting AVI file to Mpeg

How can I convert my captured analog video files from AVI to Mpeg. I am
running Windows-XP withserv. pack-2. Files are much to large now in present
format. Besides Windows Movie Maker I have Nero-6 and Roxio Media Creator 7
programs ionstalled on my computer. Thanks for any help.
