Cont-alt-del, regedit, msconfig

My problem is like many, when I execute cont-alt-del, or run regedit or
msconfig the associated windows just flash on the screen for a second and
then disappear. I know this is often the sign of a virus, but I spent 10
hours on the phone with Microsoft yesterday and after convincing themselves
that no virus is present, they shipped me off to Windows Support, believing
my Windows XP was corrupted in some way. Because my XP is factory installed
on my computer, I ended up working with Dell support. Their answer is to do
a total wipe of my hard drive. I believe that there must be an intermediate
step that will repair or fix XP without me having to back up and restore all
my data. Suggestions?

Hi

Copy and paste the URL address lines into your IE address bar:

http://www.dougknox.com

In the menu, select Win XP Utilities, Disable/Enable Task Manager.

For the regedit issue:

In the menu at http://www.dougknox.com, select Security,
Disable/Enable Registry Editing Tools.

This small VB Script will remove this restriction. If the
first time the script is run it says "Disabled", run it
again to enable registry edits again.

And then you also have MS-MVP Doug Knox's Emergency Msconfig, Regedit,
Task Manager utility:

The type of behavior you describe is typical behavior of more than
one virus/worm, the three below being the most common:

W32.Klez

W32.Yaha
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Spybot.Worm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.spybot.worm.html

Because many of the newer viruses and worms, such as the Spybot
mentioned above, can disable antivirus applications whose definitions
aren't kept up-to-date, try using one or more of the free on-line
scanners to double-check your system.
