Connectivity after installing XP SP2

I installed Windows XP SP2, and immediately ran into the
problem that my computer wouldn't connect to the
internet. Before the installation, I was running XP
Professional on a Dell Dimension 4600C, connected to the
internet through a Linksys WRT54G broadband router.
Although the router is a wireless router, this particular
computer is connected by cable. My internet connection
is a PPPoE connection set up through the router. After
installing SP2, however, I found an icon in my system
tray that showed an exclamation mark over a pair of
monitors. When I clicked the icon, it gave me a window
that indicated that my LAN connection wasn't working. I
couldn't figure out what to do to get it working again.
I clicked on the "Advanced" button and then on
the "Repair" in hopes that would repair my connection,
but it didn't. When I tried to access my router settings
by typing http://192.168.1.1 in the address bar, Internet
Explorer it told me it couldn't connect there.

I used System Restore to turn the clock back to before I
installed SP2, and now everything works as well as it did
before. But what can I do to make SP2 work?

Before installing SP2 follow the directions here, do what it says, don't
take shortcuts:

Service Pack 2 Pre-Installation Checklist (Jupiter Jones, MVP):

If you have a history of adware/spyware infections, you may also need to
fix a corrupted winsock. Check here to see if your winsock is corrupted,
apply the fix if it is:

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 811259
How to determine and recover from Winsock2 corruption

Once you go through all this, then the SP2 install should go easily.
