Connection w/Crossover Cable

I have an XP machine and a 98 machine which I am trying to
connect, NIC to NIC, with a crossover cable. I cannot see
the other machine from either box. Do I have to make some
changes in network settings? I am trying to transfer
files from the 98 box to the XP box. Any suggestions
would be greatly appreciated.
