network XP-98 w/crossover cable, pointers wanted

I connected my XP laptop to my 98SE desktop using a crossover cable,
enabled sharing on the 98 C:\ drive and on the XP 'My Music' folder,
made sure TCP\IP was installed on both computers, and enabled the guest
acc't on XP. I can't see either computer from the other.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

TIA,
Mike

I don't see where you say you ran the Connection Wizard; did you?

After that, usually firewalls will be the reasons for initial problems.
Whenever something fails, first check the firewall logs for messages.

On each WinXP PC, create local user account(s), with non-blank
password(s), that have the desired access privileges to the desired
shares. To rephrase, identical (as in username/password) accounts must
exist on each machine. Log on to the other PCs using those account(s),
and you will be able to access the designated shares, provided your
network is configured properly. Also, make sure that WinXP's built-in
firewall is disabled on the internal LAN connection.

Usually, WinXP's Networking Wizard makes it simple and painless --
almost entirely automatic, in fact. There's a lot of useful,
easy-to-follow information in WinXP's Help & Support files, and here:

I wasn't aware that XP had a connection wizard, I'll try that and see
what happens, thanks. The XP firewall is disabled, I use ZoneAlarm.
