Connecting win98se to XP network - impossible !?

Chris Langley

Hello,

I seem to have a problem with connecting a win98se HP Omnibook to a WinXP
Pro network. I've allready got 2 machines running XP connected together and
sharing files, internet and everything - but I can't seem to get the Win98SE
machine to be visible or use the shared internet connection. I'm pulling my
hair out on this one, as I can't seem to figure it out.

I've run the network wizard setup disk on the win98 machine and that doesn't
do anything either. I've manually changed the network settings and given
each an IP address. They're all on the same workgroup - I don't use a
domain. I meen, I've done this all before with 98 and millenium machines,
but for some reason this time it's not working.

Is there a security feature in XP to disable to allow non XP machines to
connect ?

I'd really appreciate any help from anyone who might of had a similar
problem.

Cheers,
Chris Langley

1) Make sure that the primary logon for the 98 machine is "Client for MS
networks"
2) Make sure you are sharing at least one folder on the 98 machine
3) Make sure that the logon on the 98 machine has a matching
username/password combination on both XP machines
4) Make sure the password contains all caps (don't ask me why, but it fixed
my printer share on my XP machine)
5) after making all these changes shut off all machines and bring them back
up

Are you using simple file sharing on the XP systems (is it XP Home or Pro)

My network is one XP and 2 98se machines so I know it can be done

Unfortunatly, I'm still having the same problem. The 98 machine isn't
displaying any of the other machines, and visa versa for the XP machines....

Anyone got any ideas ?

Do you have TCP enabled over NetBios on all three machines?
Your workgroup name is the same (paying attention to case) on all three
machines?
Run "winipcfg" on the 98 machine to get your IP and try to ping it from the
XP machines.
From a command prompt Run "ipconfig" on the XP machines and try to ping them
from the 98 machine

I'm looking for more of the things I did to get my stuff running.

What protocol(s) are you using?
Is "Microsoft file and printer sharing enabled on all machines?

I'm having the same issues, geez this is difficult. everything was fine with
3 Win98 systems, upgraded 1 to XP and now....grrrrrrrr. 2 98's see each
other, but no communication at all between the 2 OS'es. Tried the network
disks, everything.

I got it !!!!!!!!!!! NetBEUI was the issue.

Install NetBEUI on Windows XP
The files necessary for installing the NetBEUI protocol on Windows XP are
Netnbf.inf and Nbf.sys. Complete the following steps to install NetBEUI:
1.. Insert your Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive and browse to the
Valueadd\MSFT\Net\NetBEUI folder.
2.. Copy Nbf.sys to the %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\Drivers directory.
3.. Copy Netnbf.inf to the %SYSTEMROOT%\Inf hidden directory.

NOTE: To make a hidden folder viewable, perform the following steps:
1.. Click Start, click Run, type Explorer, and then press ENTER.
2.. Click Tools, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
3.. Under Advanced Settings, click Show hidden files and folders under
the Hidden files and folders Folder.
4.. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network
Connections.
5.. Right-click the adapter you want to add NetBEUI to, and then click
Properties.
6.. On the General tab, click Install.
7.. Click Protocol, and then click Add.
8.. Click to select NetBEUI Protocol from the list and then click OK.
9.. Restart your computer if you receive a prompt to complete the
installation.
The NetBEUI protocol should now be installed and working.
