connecting laptop to pc to transfer files

i have a window xp desktop that i need to connect to dell lap top to transfer
file. i have a cross over cable, just need to know what i need to do to
make the pc work with each other.
Thanks in advice, I know only enogh about compters to get me trouble

Run the Network Setup Wizard on both computers. It will enable file
sharing between the computers.

On the source computer (the one that has the file you want to
transfer), right-click and share the folder that contains the file.

On the destination computer (the one to which you want to transfer the
file), click Start | Run, type the source computer's name in the box
in this format, and click OK:

\\computer

A window will open showing shared folders on the source computer. You
can drag/drop or copy/paste desired files from there onto the
destination computer.
