Configure System Restore?

Is there a way to configure System Restore so it does not create restore
points automatically, like system checkpoints or every time I install new
software? I only want it to create restore points manually when I want them.
My objective is to prevent the restore points I want from being truncated
over time by the automatic ones. I can edit the Registry if required - just
let me know what changes to make. I have WinXP with SP-1 on one PC and SP-2
on another if there is a different procedure for each.

The only way to do this would be to increase the size limit for system
restore data so as to ensure that the points you want to retain are
still present.

You should be aware that using system restore to go back more than a
week is usually going to cause far more problems than it solves.
System Restore is best used for restoring back to "10 minutes ago" or
"just before I installed the latest version of Crap and Crud".

Good luck

Hi HMT,

<<For advanced users only, I don't recommend this>>

Here's a workaround for the daily automatic restore point.
Use the XPSystemRestorePointFrequency.vbs script to increase the
number of hours automatic restore points are created. This could be
set to days or even weeks if you like.

System Restore Scripts

You could also experiment with turning off the system restore service
by going to Start - Run and type Services.msc then press enter. Double
click on System Restore Service and Stop it and set Startup type to
Disable or manual.
