This group is for the Microsoft Access Database Program; however, I'll try
to help. If this doesn't do it, you'll need to try one of the Windows
newsgroups.

It sounds as if you may be infected with the Sasser virus, assuming no
hardware problems. The monitor is behaving normally for losing the signal
from the computer when the computer shuts down.

Go to
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.sasser.g.html to
read up on the virus and download a removeal tool, then get all the updates
from http://windowsupdate.com to patch your system against this virus and
get and keep updated an antivirus program and firewall and have them running
all the time.

i've tried that, my computer is not infected, everything is fine. i don't
know what else to do.

I've seen this type of thing with a number of different
power issues:

1) The outlet isn't supplying adequate voltage.
2) An Uninterruptable Power Supply is faulty.
3) The PC's power supply unit is faulty or failing.

Years ago I worked at a place where the electrical system
was so overloaded they suffered mini brown-outs whenever
the air conditioner kicked and a couple of other high-draw
pieces of equipment were running.

This type of thing can also happen if there is a physical
problem with the motherboard or an issue with inadequate
cooling. Sometimes as a motherboard heats up and things
expand, an electrical connection can be broken. I
understand some CPU's also have a safety feature that
shuts them down before they overheat and suffer perminant
damage.

What kind of PC is it, and how old is it?
Is there anything else plugged into the powerstrip?
Is there a fairly consistent interval betten reboots?

Have you looked at what your settings are in Control Panel
for Power Saving and/or Screensaver?

It's a emachine and about only 4 months old. And there is nothing else.
Betten Reboots? What does that mean?

I think it's a typo: he probably meant "Is there a fairly consistent
interval between reboots?"

Cyndi,

Another strange one I've seen was the computer belonging to a coworker. At
home it kept shutting down as if it was infected with Sasser, so he would
bring it in for us to fix, but there was no Sasser virus on his computer.
When he would take it home and connect to his DSL, the problem would return.
We patched his computer and installed a firewall and the problem went away.
No virus was ever found.

My computer isn't infected and I have firewall protected but I still don't
know why it is doing this.

Then as Rob suggested, it sounds as if it is a hardware problem or there is
something corrupted in Windows. Since it is a new computer, try the
manufacturer's tech support. If it is hardware, they are the ones that will
have to get it fixed for you. If it is corruption in Windows, you may have
to reinstall. Try the Windows newgroup for your version of Windows and they
may be able to help more. Since this is a new computer, I'm going to guess
WinXP. If so, try the

microsoft.public.windowsxp.perform_maintain newsgroup.

I've tried everything. I want to thankyou all for helping me. I've decided
I am going to send it in for emachines to find the problem and fix it. I
was hoping to fix it without sending it in but now I don't have a choice.
Thankyou!

Cyndi,
I am having the exact same problem. I also have an emachines and it is about 1 1/2 years old. I called the emachines techinician and he convinced me to buy a new powersupply. I have since replaced it and the problem is still there. I was wondering if you got your emachine back and if they told you what the problem was. (I also don't have a virus, it is so frustrating when others tell you that is the problem when it is clearly not). Thanks for your time.

Cyndi and Andrea -

You're asking good questions but in the wrong place. This newsgroup is
for technical support of the Windows OfficePro program, Microsoft
Access(TM) - not for hardware support.

I would suggest searching for a hardware support newsgroup.
