Computer Management EVENT VIEWER Issue???

RegistryFix7 is a registry cleaner and as such not something recommended
in this newsgroup. They can serously damage your computer and do yield
any real benefit. I suggest you uninstall it.

It's late. I need to think some more.

Gerry, Yes. I have tried it and it worked but my problem still is
nothing showing in Event Viewer - Application under Properties after
I click on the item I want to see. The tab for the Properties opens
but no information shows and it states 'No Properties Available for
this Object'.

My biggest issue is I just would like to know why when I Double Click
on the area to open the Information the screen 'flickers' like it is
trying to open the box that should open, but nothing happens. All
other areas within the MMC 3.0 Console will open properly just NOT
the Event Viewer area. I know it is suppose to open because it works
the correct way on my old laptop but won't work on this one. I wish
I knew if it was a bad DLL or if a file is missing/corrupt.

Like previous posts I have tried all ideas that Shenan has suggested
including the Super Anti-spyware & Malwarebytes programs. I have run
both and fixed the problems. I also just downloaded RegistryFix7 from
www.registryfix.com. I ran it, there were over 2000 errors and they
all got fixed including the Registry area. I rebooted and checked to
see if that would fix my problem but to no avail it did not!

I assume that being able to see information in this area is important
when troubleshooting. Like I said in a previous post, I don't really
want to go the route of a complete HD reformat unless it is my last
resort since the only problem on my laptop is this issue, everything
else works fine.

Any other help you can provide would be greatly welcome.

Thanks.

It must be VERY late because you are making really stupid comments.

"not something recommended in this newsgroup" is a completely ignorant
statement and completely untrue. I for one DO recomment registry
cleaners and often do so, with great success.
A good registry cleaner will NOT "seriously damage your computer" , but
as you said, they often DO yield a useful benefit when applied in the
right situations, of which there are many.

The good ones also allow the user to Restore any fixes it did, on the
off chance that something was removed by error. However, that has NEVER
happened to me, on any of my personally owned computer, or ANY client's
computers where I've used it to straighten out a plethora of sins.

Where you get the audacity to proclaim anything at all like "not
something recommended in this newsgroup" show you to be seriously closed
minded and lacking in any assumed power to control what can and can not
be "recommended" in this newsgroup.

What is it that makes you think you can state any kind of "policy" or
"rule" for an entire newsgroup? You have to be terribly messed up to
make such claims. This "newsgroup" can not, and does not, recommend or
NOT recommend anything: Its users do so, sometimes intelligently,
sometimes not so. It's like "tinw"; that's a truism, too. "We" all
know that, right?

Thanks for the chuckles,

Twayne

A recommendation of the order of something like one or two to every
hundred contributors who disagree with your view point hardly gives
substance to your claims. I am not going to respond any further to your
rubbish. You can have the floor to make an even bigger fool of yourself.

Earlier today I found another less satisfactory route to parts of the
Event Viewer reports.

Select Start, Help and Support, Use Tools to view your computer
information and diagnose problems, Advanced System Information, View the
Error Log. Use right click and you can copy reports for pasting into
messages. The information for each report lacks some useful information,
which makes research less easy, but it is better than nothing.

Are these reports accessible on your computer?

Hi Gerry, The answer to your question is YES. I can get to the Event Log this
way. I was hoping though that someone could give me some insight on why when
I do a 'double click' to try and open the Application area in Event Viewer
the 'only' thing that happens is the screen 'Flickers' but does not open.
*This is the ONLY area on my computer that the screen 'Flickers' when trying
to open.*

And if I use a Right click & go to Properties to try and view the
information 'Nothing' is there like it should be. It's as though there is a
missing/corrupt or bad DLL or something.

The main reason for even viewing this area to begin with was because I tried
to upgrade Yahoo Instant Messenger to V9.0 with no success. It started to
install and then just stopped cold with no error messages or anything; even
after several attempts. Other programs I installed since trying Yahoo IM
work fine, so I don't get it.

Any extra help you can provide will be greatly welcomed! My computer runs
fine and I don't have any other problems so I guess I am just being to picky.
I just like to have everything working the way it is suppose to, if you know
what I mean.

Thanks.

OK. I will do that but I guess nobody has a clue why the 'double click' won't
open the area I am trying to use.

I was just reading in a different forum and this is what someone suggested.
I will list what they said to do and maybe you could give me your advice on
whether I should try it or not, OK?

1. Right click on any .evt file and choose 'open with'.
2. In 'open with' dialog box choose 'Other'
3. Browse to %systemroot%\system32\ and choose eventvwr.exe
4. Tick the 'always use this program to oen these files' check box

Do you think I might make matters worse if I try this or is it worth a try
to see if that nasty 'double click' will Open finally?

Thanks for all your help thus far...

The area that I am actually trying to get to is the DETAILS area in the Event
Viewer where you can see the 'Details' of all the different Information/Error
lines that show. And when doing a 'R" click on each individual line to view
the Properties nothing displays and says that 'no information is available
for this object'.

The actual problem is when I 'double click' within this area -- the screen
'flickers' like it is trying to open the box where the information is
displayed for each item -- but it doesn't open -- and I have searched
everywhere for an answer but have had no luck.

The mystery is: This is the ONLY 'Detail display area' that is having a
problem. All other areas within the Computer Management Console works fine!!

Any light that anyone can shed on this problem would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks again.

My feeling is that you are not going to get an explanation why Event
Viewer is not working for you as it should, I gave you a workaround
earlier. I have spent a lot of time reading Event Viewer reports in
recent years. I have never seen another report regarding the problem.

Gerry,

Thanks for all your hard work trying to help me.....but I just can't imagine
that I am the ONLY one in the whole computer technology society that has or
is having this problem.

So what you are trying to tell me is that I am just going to have to live
with the problem unless I decide to wipe the HD and start clean reinstalling
everything. I suppose I could try an 'in-place' upgrade or reinstall but
after reading about how to do it -- it really sounds like a more complicated
& risky task then just wiping the HD and starting over..... What are your
thoughts?

Thanks.

The problem you have is not common. Most problems relating to Event
Viewer relate to the facility as a whole but in your case it only
affects one operation.

A computer repair shop has more resources and would either suggest your
problem was not worth the expense of solving it or would do a clean
install of the operating system ( or perhaps a repair install ). Home
users seeking help do not generally have the resources of a commercial
repairer or the knowledge and expertise to undertake over complicated
problem resolution. With this in mind those offering help here have to
offer solutions which they feel the other person can handle. In your
case this is difficult for me because I am unable to find evidence on
the internet of someone else having had your problem, let alone having
found a solution. The reality is that many home users and "experts" here
do not use Event Viewer to solve problems. This probably goes some way
towards explaining the lack of information about your problem.

Sensing your frustration I spent several hours this afternoon trying to
understand a tool I have hardly used called Process Monitor to see if I
could get a pointer to the cause of your problem. However, I can only
liken the experience to trying to find a pin on the floor of a pitch
black unlit room. I do, however, have two suugestions that you might
try.

Select Start, Run, in box type without the quotes
"regsvr32%SystemRoot%\system32\mmcndmgr.dll" and click on OK. If this is
not successful make a careful note of the error and post the details
back here. If successful restart the computer and try Event Viewer.

If the problem with Event Viewer remains try this.

Select Start, Run, in box type without the quotes
"regsvr32%SystemRoot%\system32\comctl32.dll" and click on OK. If this is
not successful make a careful note of the error and post the details
back here. If successful restart the computer and try Event Viewer.

Please let me know how you get on.
