Computer Management EVENT VIEWER Issue???

C

cogramma

Does anyone know if a file might be missing or corrupt?

When I go to Computer Management - Event Viewer - Application and try to
Double Click to open it to view the DETAILS it WON'T open. The screen flashes
like it wants to open, but doesn't - or - when I go to PROPERTIES and RIGHT
click - it OPENS but the information under the GENERAL tab states 'No
Properties are available on this object'. This behavior is also true for IE
- Security & System.

ALL other FOLDERS under COMPUTER MANAGEMENT work properly, ONLY EVENT VIEWER
does NOT...

I am using WINDOWS XP (with current updates incl. SP3) on a Gateway Tablet PC.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Safe Mode boot - log in as the actual user "administrator" and try event

Does it work in Safe Mode as the actual administrator user?

It is possible the Event Viewer Application log file has corrupted. Try
replacing the log file.

1.. Disable the Event Log service. Select Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, Services. Right click on Event Log, select
Properties, and change the StartUp using the scroll from Automatic to
Disable, click on Apply, OK, and exit.
2.. Restart Windows XP.
3.. Delete the corrupt log -Appevent.evt In Windows Explorer locate
the log file C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\AppEvent.Evt and delete
AppEvent.Evt Your existing event data will be lost, but a new log file
will be created when the service is restarted, and that log will
start to accumulate new events.
4.. Re-enable the Event Log service. Select Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, Services. Right click on Event Log, select
Properties, and change the StartUp using the scroll from Disable to
Automatic, click on Apply, OK, and exit. Restart Windows XP.

You cannot delete or rename the log files while the Event Log service is
running.

Hi Gerry, I am currently using AVG 7.5 Program Version 7.5.552 Virus Base:
270.10 1/1870 Release Date: 12/31/08; it has been on my Computer since 2/06
and runs every other day. I also downloaded the FREE version of Ad-Aware
2008 yesterday, ran it, it found a bunch of objects and I deleted them,
restarted but that didn't help either.

One note: I run several other programs with no problems, i.e. OUTLOOK 2003,
WORKS 8.0, QUICKEN 2006 etc. The ONLY other problem I am having is that I am
unable to run the INSTALLERS for YAHOO INSTANT MESSENGER Versions 8.0 & 9.0.

Having used Spybot S & D and AdAware I find Spybot better than AdAware

I would also suggest you download and run Spybot S & D (freeware
version) and see if it
finds anything like a Trojan. If Spybot S & D finds anything significant
( other than cookies) you need to be wary. If it removes something and
it returns or another nasty pops up it can be an indication that there
is another hidden nasty not being detected by Spybot.
Spybot S & D. There is a freeware version buried in this link:

What's with the selective upper-case lettering? It's similar to those with
Tourette syndrome verbally - or at least that is how it comes across in your
postings. You may be doing it to emphasize something - but I assure you -
at least for me - it is unnecessary. If you happen to have Tourette
syndrome, I did not know it could come across in the written word. ;-) In
any case- I was just curious.

(1)
Reboot.
With Event Viewer/Computer Management closed...

Start button --> run --> type in:
regsvr32 els.dll
--> Click OK.

Restart the computer and try event viewer again.

If that doesn't work...

(2)
Is the "Event Log" service running?

Start button --> run --> type in:
cmd /k net start "Event Log"
--> Click OK.

What messages come up?

(3)
Make sure you have cleaned up your Event Log files... Ignoring the symptoms,
perform the following:
How to Delete Corrupt Event Viewer Log Files
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/172156
(I believe Gerry may have pointed you down this path before - but in your
case - I would say *all* of your Event Log files may be corrupt. Delete ALL
*.evt files in the proper step - not just one.)

(4)
I suggest downloading, installing, running, updating and performaing a full
system scan (individually - not at the same time) with:
(Free versions are fine.)

SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/
MalwareBytes
http://www.malwarebytes.com/

And removing whatever they find.

After doing which ever of the above needed - or while doing it - come back
and let us know what changed between the event log working and it not
working... Why did you go in to check your event log in the first place?
What led you to this point?

C

cogramma

Shenan, The reason for viewing the Event Log was to look for errors from the
Yahoo Instant Messenger Installer. The IM Installer starts to install but
won't complete. It just goes away without any errors or anything. I was
hoping there would be a message or something in the Application or System
Error Log to point me in the right direction. See other posts for more
information.

C

I've already tried several spyware anti-virus malware tools etc. Do you
really think running the two programs you recommend will catch something that
the others have missed?

Yes.
There is no de-facto standard and/or catch-all in the antispyware business.
Those two can cleanup things the others miss (including Spybot Search and
Destroy and LavaSoft Ad-Aware...)

Did you try the first suggstion and/or the other three already?
Does the first one result in a success message?

C

cogramma

Yes. I tried the 1st suggestion. And I did all the other 3 too as suggested
but still the same results. The problem isn't not being able to open the
'Event Viewer itself, I can Double click on it, it will Open -but - Double
Click will not work once I try to click on Application - Internet Explorer -
Security and System! And when I try a Right Click - Properties 'no
information appears' with the following message on the General Tab: 'No
Properties Available on this Object' and I don't understand why?

I went to my old laptop to check in the same areas, was able to Open
everything properly and information does show up when I click on 'Properties'
and I can view all information on whichever line I pick to look at. So it is
a mystery why it's not working on the laptop I am currently using. I am
using Windows XP Professional with SP3 & all Windows updates are current.

It appears my only solution at this point is to reformat the HD and start
clean. But any help anyone can give to save steps would be greatly welcomed!

Thanks again for anyone that can help solve this mystery.

The regiostration of the DLL ios not to fix the opening of the Event
Viewer - but the problem as you describe it. Perhaps you have a corrupt
DLL.

I would not perform a clean installation - a little overkill in 99% of the
cases. I would perform a repair installation. It should keep everything
intact - yet fix corrupt files.

It would still be wise to backup the things important to you:
Favorites/bookmarks, email, contacts, documents, pictures, spreadsheets,
installation executables, product keys/serial numbers, etc. I would also
download, install and run "Belarc Advisor" (free) and print out its
multi-page results. It should contain information that will be invaluable
to you if something goes wrong and a clean installation becomes necessary.

Thanks for the information. The steps involved for a repair installation
seem alot more complicated then just to do a wipe of HD and starts fresh. It
was my husbands suggestion to do a HD wipe & start clean to save alot of
headaches, (which he has done in the past tor rebuild his computer) but he
said he doesn't know the details of Windows so suggested to post here and get
advice from a professional in the field.

Is it a DLL file that could be corrupted that is causing the Information
area to not display the proper information? Could the bad DLL be replaced to
solve this issue?

How necessary is it for the MMC 3.0 Console Event Viewer area to work? Is it
used for diagnostic purposes in the event of problems? My laptop works fine
except for this area and I just hate to do any drastic steps if it isn't
absolutely critical or necessary, if you know what I mean.

If I download the Belarc Advisor should I do it now or wait until I would
have a clean and error free computer or would it show anything currently that
might help with the current issue?

Thanks.

No entries are ever logged in Internet Explorer. The log was added to
Event Viewerwith the introduction of Internet Explorer 7 but never
followed through by Microsoft.

Did you try this suggestion as I seem to have missed out on the result?

Click Start, Run and type:regsvr32 els.dll
Press Enter. You should see the following message
DllRegisterServer in els.dll succeeded.

Gerry, Yes. I have tried it and it worked but my problem still is nothing
showing in Event Viewer - Application under Properties after I click on the
item I want to see. The tab for the Properties opens but no information
shows and it states 'No Properties Available for this Object'.

My biggest issue is I just would like to know why when I Double Click on the
area to open the Information the screen 'flickers' like it is trying to open
the box that should open, but nothing happens. All other areas within the
MMC 3.0 Console will open properly just NOT the Event Viewer area. I know it
is suppose to open because it works the correct way on my old laptop but
won't work on this one. I wish I knew if it was a bad DLL or if a file is
missing/corrupt.

Like previous posts I have tried all ideas that Shenan has suggested
including the Super Anti-spyware & Malwarebytes programs. I have run both
and fixed the problems. I also just downloaded RegistryFix7 from
www.registryfix.com. I ran it, there were over 2000 errors and they all got
fixed including the Registry area. I rebooted and checked to see if that
would fix my problem but to no avail it did not!

I assume that being able to see information in this area is important when
troubleshooting. Like I said in a previous post, I don't really want to go
the route of a complete HD reformat unless it is my last resort since the
only problem on my laptop is this issue, everything else works fine.

Any other help you can provide would be greatly welcome.

Thanks.
