Computer Disk hardware configuration problem

Dell desktop that's running windows xp home edition. When I start the
computer, blue screen flashes and then I receive error stating "Windows could
not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could
not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware.
Please check the Windows documentation about hardware disk configuration and
your hardware reference manuals for additional information. Also, I tried
F12 with setup disk to repair the problem but I don't have the password that
was created in 2001 for this computer. Adm that created no longer works for
this company. What can I do to fix this problem other than start from
scratch?
