I have followed the steps as written in the help guide for setting up a home
network.The host shows the network group with both computers. The other
computer shows the network group but no computers as being part of the group.
The host computer shows the printer on the the other computer. The other
computer does not show the host computer's printer. Both are set for sharing.

How can this be fixed?

Since I haven't seen the guide, I don't know the steps you took, but run
through the troubleshooter by MVP Hans-Georg Michna here:

http://www.michna.com/kb/wxnet.htm - Small Network Troubleshooter by
Hans-Georg Michna

If, after you've done that, you are still unable to resolve your problem
post back to this thread and tell us the results of the troubleshooter.

How many machines can I have in a network that is running Windows XP
Home edition?

Could you please elaborate on your question? As you've asked it, this
question is extremely broad. Do you mean how many XP Home boxen can
connect to a server, how many you could have in a home network, etc.?
In what sort of network setup? What exactly do you want to know?

How many computers can I have on a home network if:
1. All computers are running Windows XP Home edition?
2. They are connected using cat 5 cable and 10/100 switches?
3. The aim is to share one Internet connection, printers and some files?

Thanks

I am having trouble sharing a printer (and files) from my home PC (running XP
Home with SP2 installed) to my Lap Top computer running windows 2000.

My Lap Top can see my home computer - but it can not see any of the folders
or printers that I have shared. I am getting the following error message:

\\HOMEPC is not accessilbe.
There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request.

Is there some configuration I missed?

Gray,

See if this helps:
<http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/w2kmsgs/3872.asp>

Is the laptop normally used on a domain? Is the Guest account active, on both
computers? Enable Guest with Start - Run - "cmd", then type "net user guest
/active:yes" in the command window.

Al;so, look at registry key [HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa], value
restrictanonymous, on the XP computer.
<http://www.microsoft.com/windows200...2000/techinfo/reskit/en-us/regentry/46688.asp>
<http://www.jsifaq.com/subf/tip2600/rh2625.htm>
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=246261
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=296403

The above articles refer to Windows 2000. Remember WinXP is NT V5.1, and Win2K
is NT V5.0.

Have you used the Registry Editor before? If not, it's a scary tool, but it's
pretty simple once you get used to it. Here are a couple articles that might
help:
<http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...home/using/productdoc/en/tools_regeditors.asp>
<http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/registry>

Just remember to backup the key (create a registry patch) for
[HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa] before making any changes, if
appropriate.

From the Annoyances article:
You can create a Registry patch by opening the Registry Editor, selecting a
branch, and choosing Export from the File menu. Then, specify a filename, and
press OK. You can then view the Registry patch file by opening it in Notepad
(right-click on it and select Edit). Again, just double-click on a Registry
patch file (or use Import in the Registry Editor's File menu) to apply it to the
registry.

Create identical user accounts and passwords on both computers. See if
that fixes things. You may need to reboot.
