Did you follow the troubleshooting steps in the column, Linda? If you did,
you should at least have a good idea of where the problem is, and if we're
dealing with a software interaction or some other problem. You need to narrow
down the problem and then give us some more specific details before we can
provide some guidance.

Charlie.

It means either you are not connected to the internet OR your EMail account
settings are wrong.

Server for email should be more than 'pop3'.
Server for smtp should be more that 'smtp'.

Besides the references others have given, it's wise to remember that many of
the broadband and dialup ISP's block send access to all email servers but
there own.

Almost certainly your Account Name is not "pop3", but your actual email
address or ISP account name. Your ISP may mask the domain name, making "pop3"
and "smtp" correct as server names, but only some do that. You really need to
check with your ISP to get the correct settings for your account. Most have a
web page that has all the correct settings for Outlook Express, assuming you
know your actual account name and password. Check the support pages listed
off your ISP's home page.

I purchased a WLAN PCI card, installed it, but the computer doesn't seem to
recognize it's existence. There was no message "new hardware", or when I use
the hardware manager to install the drivers, the WLAN PCI card is not listed
or located. I took the card out and plugged it back in twice.

There's no indication anywhere that I've been able to find that the card is
there.

There are several possibilities, including defective hardware. But the most
important thing is to follow the EXACT directions that were included with the
card for how to get it recognized. The sequence of events is critical here.
And, ultimately, you'll need to go back to the card's manufacturer to
troubleshoot the problem. They alone know what it takes to get it properly
recognized.

When I attempt to open the device manager I receive the message: Program
file of device manager devmgr.dll can not be loaded.

What can I do?

Hi, I have a problem with disabling a network connection. When I right click
the network icon in the sys tray, I get this message:

"It is not possible to disable the connection at this time. This
connection may be using one or more protocols that do not support
plug-and-play or it may have been initiated by another user or the system
account".

Only way I can disable it is to go to Device Manager and disable the NIC.
When I try to enable it, either from a shortcut or from the Network
Connections folder, I get "Connection failed!". And again, it can only be
enabled through the NIC properties in Device Manager.

About 2 weeks ago, I installed a Creative Audigy soundcard and moved the NIC
to another PCI slot. The same problem occured but was somehow resolved after
reinstalling the sound card software.

Well, it happened again, but this time nothing seems to work, including
reinstalling the NIC to its original slot and uninstalling/reinstalling the
Creative software twice more.

Among other things I've done, I've disabled all protocols except TCP/IP in
the connections propterties and went to GPedit (XP Pro) to enable all network
priviliges despite being the only user (Admin). I've also re-enabled some
network related services in the Services panel - still nothing seems to work.

Would certainly appreciate any help on this. Thanks.

Hi, just solved it. The NIC was in a slot where a modem used to be. When I
removed the modem, I forgot to uninstall its software. Did that and now
everything is OK.

Okay, I have a laptop with a UniChrome video driver. Whenever I try to play
Halo, I get the message "This video driver has been know to have problems
with this game. Upgradeing your video driver may fix this problem." That's
the gist of it, anyways. The thing is, I can't find the site to upgrade it,
and even then, I doubt I'd know how to upgrade it. Please hep me.

I believe it isa VIA/S3G UniChrome Graphics. However, I am not certain that
this is correct.

I'm using an earthlink DSL through a Bell South Phone Line. I get an intermittent Local Area Network A network cable is unplugged message. Most of the time, I'm communicating okay, but the message seems to make me break link and reset. All cables have been reseated and swapped around.

They must have the same workgroup name, the same user name and the same
password. Files and folders must be marked as shared. Blanks don't work.
