Childproof a PC?

L

Lordy

it might be better that he be exposed to (whatever you
fear) while still under your supervision so you can help
guide his choices now, helping to promote healthy attitudes
and discuss these things... besides that, the forbidden
fruit is always the sweetest.

Esp at 15! Still not enough info in OP as to why..

I would have thought it a great time for him to get his homework done
(using the PC if necessary)

On the otherhand he may be addicted to online gaming etc.

Just not enough info to make the moral judgement re giving kids
responsibility and seeing what they do with it (which was not solicited in
the first place!)

This method works very well unless your child is a lying,
dishonorable little twit. If that's the case, I'm afraid you're
screwed no matter what you do.

Jesus, he's 15... if youre that worried, why not get off your arse and
do
some parenteing.

Nonsense. Most good parenting involves 1.) love, 2.) discipline, and
3.)
common sense. Just because you may not be as good at employing any of
the
above doesn't give you the right to insult all the good parents out
here.
No disrespect intended but, judging from this and your prior post, it
sounds
as though *you* may have some issues here. A problem like this is
*not* as
difficult to solve as you make it out to be.
Your concept is exactly as it should be. However, you must take into
consideration that the current attitude of most Americans is that they
are not responsible for ANYTHING! And that includes parents acting
like
parents! God forbid!!

You must remember that absolutely no citizen/resident of the U.S.A. is
responsible for his/her actions!! It is someone else's
responsibility!!!

Keeping all the above in mind, it is absolutely forbidden that any
parent should impart any sense of honesty, integrity, or sense of
responsibility to their children! It's some else's responsibility to
do
that!!!

It kind of creeps me out to think that there are kids who will lie
to their father's face and say, "Sure, Dad, I won't turn on the
computer while you aren't home," and the minute their parents
leave, on goes the computer. In my humble and old-world view, such
kids aren't worth spit, and the problem is a lot larger than
whether the computer gets used or not. The problem is, how do you
make an honest person out of a lying little weasel?

Hello:

We have a 15 year old son who we want to limit his computer activity
after school, while he's home alone -- before we get home from work.
We used to be able to just use a key to lock the keyboard with old 386
and 486 machines. But they don't make this like that anymore. Now we
have two an AMD 1.2 GHz machines. One is running Win2000 and the other
one has WinXP sp2 on it. Is it possible to "lock" these two pc's?
Not anymore TBH.

Perhaps you should actually start treating him like the adult he is
soon to be and put some trust in him.

Greedo shot first. Greedo ALWAYS shot first. You did not see Solo shoot
first.
It never happened. Never, ever. Not in any version. Remember: Greedo
shot first.

A 15 year old IS a minor, and is under the guardianship of his parents. He
should be treated with appropriate trust and restrictions as he warrants.

It is certianly possible to "lock" the machines in the sense that a child would
find it difficult to "unlock" them for unsupervised use...

Change all the passwords for the user accounts. Don't give the child the
passwords. Log off or shut down the computer before you leave the house.

While passworded user accounts were easy to circumvent in Win 3.x and 9x, it is
much more difficult to do so under NT/2K/XP.

Perhaps you should actually start treating him like the adult he is
soon to be and put some trust in him.

Maybe he has demonstrated that he doesn't yet warrant that degree of trust...

Grow up a 15 yr old is a child even if they think they are not and before
you start i have 6 children and may i add 3 of them have there own pc and
serf the net when they wish, but if i say they cant(punishment ) then that is
the end of it, until i allow it.Otherwise really I would expect the comment
you made to be offered by a 15 -18 yr old if your not that age then you need
to get out out more.

No need to lock the PC's
Get him 10 dozens Condoms and invite his girlfriend to come over after school.

I'll always remember the "National Geographic" magazine we had on
the book table at the back of my 2nd grade classroom. Somebody --
I assume the teacher -- had taken a ballpoint pen and had drawn
little dots over all the nipples of the black women, and had done
it so hard and so long that the point of the pen had cut little
round holes through the pages of the magazine. So when you looked
at the pictures, all you saw were naked black women with holes
through their breasts. I was only eight years old, but even then I
remember thinking that whoever had done it must have been a real
nut job.

You have the writing skills of a five year old.

John Doe napisa³(a):
Password protect your Windows on the other partition. (I think this
is the solution if all you want to do is stop your kid from using a
personal computer.)

Buy a disk manager like PartitionMagic. Do it for the kid.

Make a partition for him on your hard disk.

On that partition, install Windows and his applications.

Make a backup copy of that partition.

If he is to do anything useful, make sure his files go to removable
media.

Every evening, delete his partition and copy the copy back into its
place. That will make him reinstall anything he wasn't supposed to be
installing, every day.
I think he wants to short the time he's son spends on computer rather
than get into conflict and fight with own son... Think about John Doe.

Take out memory modules. These are small and handy like car radio panel.
Now he should buy another ones... Check for monitor if it's hot that
means that he figured out this and got another modules and he used
computer again.

Perfect Angel

Al Smith blew some smoke and said...
I know that when I was a kid, had my parents asked me not to touch
something -- the TV, for example -- while they were out of the
house, and I had said, "No, I won't touch it," then that would
have been the end of it.

There are kids like that, my wife was one, my oldest is another. I don't
think it has ever ocurred to my oldest to break a rule or not do what I
say. My brother-in-law and my youngest are the opposite, they constantly
test the rules, immediately do the opposite of what they are told. It
takes a consistant and firm parent to raise the latter. Then there are
kids who will do everything you tell them and spend years crafting the
image of a perfect child and get away with murder behind your back and
everyone that knows them. That's why I advise you not to make assumptions
about your children, KNOW... Check under their mattress, check their
closet and dresser, know where they spend their time and with whom. And
when they tell you they are tired and going to bed early, spend a few
minutes talking to them and make sure you get close enough to smell them.
Parenting doesn't end just because the kid starts driving.
