Character Map

Hi there all. I've been trying to use the character map
to insert special characters into both Word 2002 and a
non-Microsoft product (compatible to Microsoft Windows).
I have found two problems. First: I want to be able to
use a keystroke shortcut or type the Unicode equivelent
into the document. I've been told (Microsoft "Help") to
insert a special character using the Unicode equivelent
by positioning the curser in the appropriate place in the
document, then press ALT and the Unicode equivelent value
on the number pad. However, this does not display the
expected code. It seems as though I have to type the
plus sign (+) in addition to the numeric or alpha keys.
Is that the way it's supposed to be?

Second: Certain characters such as arrows do not appear
as expected when I do copy or insert them. In Word, they
appear as empty boxes. In the non-Microsoft program,
they appear as question marks. Is there a way to get
around this or am I doing it all wrong in the first place?

If possible, please respond to this post to my email
address as shown above.

Thank you much!
Jeannie

In Character Map select a character. If that character has a alt+numerical
keyboard sequence, the sequence will be in the lower right hand corner of
Character Map window following the work "Keystroke". You do not need to
type the + sign. Just hold down the Alt key while you type all digits of the
keystroke sequence {including any leading zeros}.

In Word 2002 the way to insert a character is to use Insert, Symbols.
However, opening Character Map will also work.

Not sure about the other program.
