character map not working

The Windows Character Map is not working on my system. I can open the
character map, access various fonts, etc., but when I try to select a
character, nothing happens. I have the same result when I access the "insert
symbol" function in Word or Publisher. I have tried uninstalling and
reinstalling the character map with the same result. I am running Windows XP
Professional on a Dell Latitude D630, and as far as I can remember, the
character map has not worked since I started using this PC (about 9 months).

So, you start Character map and go to the appropriate font.
Single click on the appropriate character and it doesn't grow bigger?
If it grows bigger you then click Select and it doesn't appear in Characters
to copy?
If it appears in Characters to copy you click on the Copy button and then go
to the program you desire to put the character in and when you click Edit,
Paste or press the Ctrl + V key it doesn't paste?

Which of these steps fail?

Thanks for your prompt response back. It seems worse than I thought it
would be. I am now assuming that you are selecting a normal Windows font
such as Arial or Times New Roman, that you can see the characters and the
Advanced view box is checked. Character set at the bottom is set to Unicode.
If all this is true there has to be some setting within Windows that is
preventing your selection. Now, if this XP Pro is a company computer, has a
group policy been set to prevent you from doing what you are attempting
(check with your IT department)? Have you run full malware scans on your
computer (in Safe mode)?

Does your normal Copy and paste work within Word or Publisher?

Check you system drive Windows\System32 folder for the actual program, right
click on the Charmap.exe file and then left click on Properties General tab
size should be 78.5 KB (80,384 bytes) with a varying size on disk, then
click on Version and it should be 5.1.2600.0. If these are not the same,
then you have an incorrect version on your system.

Hopefully someone else has had this issue and found a solution. Other than
what I have written above I am at a loss as to why this simple program won't
work, especially since it has been "reinstalled."

Let us know what you find out.
